which one is that? check out dexter. the title character is played fantastically by michael hall (if i ever swung that way, he'll be top of my list). but the volatile and explosive sister character is very well acted too and improves every season in complexity. she totally owns season 7. it's a bit bloody and gory, but once you get past that, the premise and the ethical dilemmas etc. are very intelligent and compelling. the storytelling in later seasons is not as tight as the earlier seasons.

Quite a man crush there.
A bit bloody and gory? I was talking about the show where Katey Sagal erased her Peggy Bundy image forever, Sons of Anarchy, which is much more than a bit bloody.

Re: the best most kickass and likable female character on television
It's a poorly written, extremely cliched character. They have basically tried to throw every single possible cliche at her. Let me count the cliches:
1. Daddy issues.
2. Looks up to strong dad and brother, and tries to be one of the boys.
3. When under pressure: expletives.
4. When under pressure: sleep with nearest male.
5. Have no stable relationships.
6. I forget - was there an alcohol or drug abuse issue as well?
7. Brilliant cop with issues with authority.
8. Cop who sleeps with partners, seniors, witnesses, criminals... and even victims? (I forget this last part).
The cliches get even worse and gag-inducing as you get to the penultimate and ultimate season. But I do appreciate the actress Jennifer Carpenter for throwing her heart into the character.

watched the pilot episode of six feet under, michael hall's breakout show last night. very well done -- looks to be promising. will probably watch more episodes during the holiday break.

"kickass" is one of the worst american words invented. could this be the onset of your second teen-age years?MaxEntropy_Man wrote:debra morgan from dexter. fuckin - A!

the new word is badass. I like it... although I haven't fully made it a part of my vocab yet.

If kickass is 90s, badass is definitely 2000s. I don't even know what the word is this decade.

It's still used frequently, no? Atleast among kids in late teens and 20s... this decade is still young. something will come up soon.

You are probably right. The cool things which usually get identified with a decade show up later in the decade and last a few years into the next decade. For example, I read that the trends that we identify as being 60s actually lasted from late 60s to early 70s. Which means... you have a chance at starting the trend... at least on this board!

this is a great show. very different from the usual fare i like to watch. but it's filled with dark irony and often depressing.
love the opening music too:

you were probaby a teenager in 1990.
what do your teen-aged advisors say about "fuckin-A?"
"(we) kicked ass" is quite likely an expression that's commoly used in american sports, meaning "we beat them thoroughly and humiliated them." the notion of humiliating one's opponent in a game is entirely american, juvenile, and male.
using "kick-ass" as an adjective to express great liking for a movie or tv show represents wholesale, indiscriminate absorption of highly questionable, american, cultural values.
one wishes that you wouldn't write so fast that your writing misrepresents you.

that's an expression the female character in dexter i was alluding to uses a lot. not my own. speaking of which, aren't you making a mountain out of a mole hill?
