Re: canto at gabelmeister's peak
Probably one of the best movies of 2014. It should win a few nominations for the Academy awards.

the only tarantino movie i've enjoyed is 'pulp fiction'.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:i watched django unchained over the weekend. my first tarantino movie. over the top gratuitous violence and unlikely story. any other tarantino recos?

i watched about 10 minutes of 'inglorious basterds' and switched it off. the language was a bit too jarring. i didn't care much for 'kill bill' either. the truffaut original 'the bride wore black' was a much better movie. i don't remember if i tried watching 'reservoir dogs'.
i watched an interview with tarantino a few month ago that put me off and so am not too inspired to watch any of his movies including 'django unchained'. let me see if i can find it.

i don't recall a whole lot - there was a scene with some guy yelling at a bunch of people (soldiers?) using a lot of profanity. maybe the fact that i was watching it on home TV (the kids were not around me but were in the house) made me rather uncomfortable and i stopped it. i know it is a highly rated movie but somehow i have not been inspired enough to go back to it.
i think i liked tarantino when i didn't know better!

i r'ber watching IB on the side when XH had it on TV.... hated it initially for its gory scenes, so continued working on my laptop. but by the end of it, it became terribly interesting, could not help getting drawn to it.

after HA's and your posts of desplat's music, i went looking for other clips and found the painted veil. then i ended up watching the movie. it's another married brits having an affair in a foreign land movie, but well worth it. it's an adaptation of a somerset maugham novel. a love story, not overly sentimental and weepy, and everyone did a good job.

apparently this is the second adaptation. it was originally done in the 30s with greta garbo in the female lead role.

Can it really be true that Mike Leigh, David Oyelowo – and Paul Thomas Anderson – have been overlooked in favour of American Sniper and The Imitation Game? Peter Bradshaw stamps his foot at some of these nominations – but is glad for the success of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman.
And very little for Paul Thomas Anderson’s outstanding Inherent Vice: and nothing in way of best picture or best director. Richard Linklater’s marvellous Boyhood has six nominations, but that is fewer than the decent but middling film The Imitation Game, about wartime codebreaker Alan Turing — and only as many as Clint Eastwood’s fantastically dull and mediocre American Sniper, which has been hugely overrated. Bradley Cooper (usually a smart and talented actor) was, frankly, not particularly well cast or well directed in this ho-hum picture and the idea of him getting a best actor nomination ahead of Oyelowo or Spall or Ralph Fiennes is pretty silly.

it's true, americans have a hero complex and great big thirst for such movies, but this one is by eastwood, and may show some shades of gray instead of the usual rara american marine.
https://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/movies/2015/01/15/bradley-cooper-stars-clint-eastwood-american-sniper/e1ZyR9HoVuguTb9eqJJ1AI/story.html
While “American Sniper” is told from the viewpoint of the American military, it’s clear-eyed about the wreckage our presence leaves in its wake. An Iraqi patriarch (Navid Negahban) offers to lead US personnel (for cash) to an Al Qaeda enforcer called the Butcher (Mido Hamada), and Kyle assures the safety of the man and his children. It does not end well; in a later Stateside scene in which Kyle flips out over his newborn daughter’s cries, it’s a good bet whose wails he’s hearing. The film’s sympathies are with the grunts, but as a portrait of bureaucratic mismanagement and tactical overkill, the movie stings more than it soothes. Every so often, we seem to see the US troops, encased in high-tech hardware and adorned with death’s-head insignias, the way Iraqis may have seen them: as the stormtroopers from “Star Wars.”
