a guess: in TN the "masala dosA" is often listed on the menu as masal dosai (doing northindians the favor of cutting off redundant vowels at the end of words as is their wont).  they probably misread it and hence the east african prefix to the dosai.

Hmm, I thought masai implied an afro-tamil fusion. Also, don't some African cuisines have a dosa like thing called injera? Maybe injera is a corrupted form of Kanjivaram.
