not bragging. i wish i had their problem. neighbor has a horrendous ice dam -- water leakage problem. i've done everything by the fucking book and still have ice dams. dreading when it is going to become a full fledged leak like my neighbor. should have gotten a roof rake sooner. every store is sold out. will probably order one online. this winter has been a real mofo. will be glad when it's over.

remember the Atlanta mess a couple of years ago. I was there a week before and a week after. That was nothing but given their almost zero budget, personnel, and expertise in snow/ice weather that was a big deal.
What is stinky about this MASS snow is that despite annual budget, equipment outlay and dedicated personnel they dropped the ball. While a mess is expected in Atlanta it is not in Boston. Perhaps, Boston should learn from Chicago and Minneapolis.

the snow is okay, not much where I am, but what's with the gusts of wind? i couldn't sleep all night because the wind was howling and lashing against my building and then when i went outside it almost knocked me down to the ground and i couldn't see properly either as the wind caused the snow to swirl everywhere.

i don't think they dropped the ball. i just don't think even in a deeply blue state like MA, there is enough public investment to deal with winter issues and in upgrading the transportation system. those "pinko commies" in places like norway and japan are not fearful of doing the right thing. we are old, creaking, don't want to make any public investments, and yet miraculously expect the roads to be perfect and for the trains to run perfectly on schedule. sorry, not happening.
the silver lining (there is always one) is that this has sparked a serious conversation. everyone is talking about infrastructure and how pathetic it is. hopefully, there will be some consensus building in the coming months that we'll do something about this. i think winters from hell are here to stay, not just a freak occurrence.

Uppili
I lived near Chicago and in Minneapolis. Weather gets everyone. Each city functions well to a certain level. Above one foot every city has problems. Above twenty inches , you need time to recover. 80 inches in less than 20 days is an unheard of snow in major cities. Only Syracuse and buffalo have seen something like this.
One needs to be patient and cautious in this situation.
Laughing at Atlanta is equally illogical.

Weather forecast now in my part of the world: Light freezing rain *shudder!*Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:MaxEntropy_Man wrote:not bragging. i wish i had their problem. neighbor has a horrendous ice dam -- water leakage problem. i've done everything by the fucking book and still have ice dams. dreading when it is going to become a full fledged leak like my neighbor. should have gotten a roof rake sooner. every store is sold out. will probably order one online. this winter has been a real mofo. will be glad when it's over.

i've heard that that's what happens when one doesn't tip enough.pravalika nanda wrote:the snow is okay, not much where I am, but what's with the gusts of wind? i couldn't sleep all night because the wind was howling and lashing against my building and then when i went outside it almost knocked me down to the ground and i couldn't see properly either as the wind caused the snow to swirl everywhere.

i don't think it will feel like winter ever again until we have six foot snow banks, a ton of snow on the roof and struggles with getting it off with a roof rake. when you've done the roof rake thing standing on a ladder, nothing's going to faze you.

How far up can you reach with that rake, isn't it risky to rake standing on a ladder in icy conditions.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:i don't think it will feel like winter ever again until we have six foot snow banks, a ton of snow on the roof and struggles with getting it off with a roof rake. when you've done the roof rake thing standing on a ladder, nothing's going to faze you.

i've taken off quite a bit. it's only risky if you don't find a stable position for the ladder on the ground. i always make sure there is sufficient area behind me with a thick snow covering, that if i fall, i fall on a few feet of snow. that way my head and body are buffeted by snow on the ground. i was also wearing a helmet to fend off falling icicles. i'm doing everything i can to stop myself from writing a check for $1800 which is the going rate to hire a professional to do this job. it's me against old man winter. we'll see who has the bigger balls.

Re: LOL! you call that snow?
another win for me because of this winter weather. while looking for something to stay warm while trying to rake snow off the roof in -8 F weather, i discovered this product which is going to allow me to get going on my bike earlier in the spring:
http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Heat-Factory-Glove-Sized-Hand-Warmers-12-pair&i=411132&r=view&cvsfa=2586&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=343131313332&kpid=411132&gclid=CKKs7oP258MCFYI6gQod9KcAxw
much nicer to get a 40 pk at the local price club.

I'm hoping that this pride in one's winter misery will abate soon. even cricket sans fast bowlers is more tolerable. do you hear any of us bragging about 70 bloody degrees f in the middle of winter, or complaining about not having the opportunity to fall off one's roof?

Look at it as a mild form of cry-o-therapy.

you don't have to feel jealous at least today. just crack open the window and look outside. you're welcome, we sent it your way.

if it's any consolation, bubba driving too fast and following too closely in 29-degree, slightly-snowy weather may be more hazardous than toiling in 2 or 3 feet of snow.
