India not to cut multi-billion dollar food handout programme Empty India not to cut multi-billion dollar food handout programme

Post by nevada Wed Feb 18, 2015 12:41 pm

A panel set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month urged the government to lower the number of beneficiaries to 40 percent from 67 percent as part of efforts to trim the $18.64 billion food subsidy bill that drains stretched state finances. "No way," said the top-level source involved in the decision making. "We're deeply committed to our social welfare programmes, including our food security measures. There is no question at all of cutting down the number of beneficiaries." The view in the government is that cutting back on the handouts will anger voters ahead of key state elections in poor but politically heavyweight states like Bihar, the source said.

I hope this is not a political move (as suggested in this article) keeping Bihar & UP in mind. Let's hope NDA can execute this programme better in terms of reducing wastage and minimizing corruption; when they accomplish those goals it will become easier to cut down on the number of beneficiaries.

Looks like Modi is falling into the same trap that Indira and CONmen fell into. Looks like he forgot why he was elected.

Turns out that PVN was rare in being courageous (and the nation doesn't pay respect to him for bringing in prosperity).

N G Ranga, Minoo Masani and Rajagopalachari were ahead of their times in thinking of development and CONartists & the country ignored them and destroyed the economy.

Incidentally, Masani was one of the first politicians who wanted a "Uniform Civil Code" in India.

Yes, it is a shame he doesn't get the respect he deserves. He was the only congressman with the guts to totally sideline the remote control freak gandhi family.
If he were 10 years younger, he might have got a second term giving him more time to implement his plans. Still, despite the challenges he faced, he did enough to get the country on the track to fast tracked development. It is a sign of petty mindedness and utter hatred that made MT disrespect him even after his death. Thanks to Subramanian Swami, she was stopped or else this heartless woman would have become PM of India.

Sorry to say this, he was known as a lapdog of Nehru family and got treated like one in the end.

Hmm.... Have some respect for the man. If the Gandui family treated him poorly, that reflects them. The real lap dogs of the Nehru family were D Sanjeevaiah, Brahmananda Reddy, etc. NTR broke the hold and the rest is history.

You're absolutely right sir, which was why major industries (BHEL, MITHANI, HCL, HMT etc.,) were established during his tenure.

You're correct again, our neighbor TN benefited the most, not a single major industry was awarded to AP.

Not after he became PM. He ignored Sonia and did what he needed to do.

PM narasimha Rao was different from frequent flier to Delhi pvn. He was very simple and avoided corruption. His sons were foolish to peddle his name for profit and bought some bad name to his legacy.
Whatever were his political years before he became a pm, once he became pm he was his own man.
