Alternative chat application Empty Alternative chat application

Post by charvaka Tue Sep 13, 2011 8:53 pm

I was fooling around with chat apps because the forumotion one is rather limited. The key feature I want is the ability for individual users to put other users on ignore. That way you will be ignore the people you want to ignore, and the need for moderation is minimized.

I found one application that has the ignore feature (you type /ignore username to ignore that user.) I implemented it on the Portal page (under the Coffeehouse logo above, next to Home, click on Portal.) The one big drawback of this app is that it does not have password protection (anybody can login in as charvaka, Bittu or whatever.) I am still trying to figure out password protection in the free module. (There is a paid upgrade that has loads of features, but I am trying to stay away from paid options.)

If you are interested, please test out the new app and post your reactions here.

no pwd protection = deal breaker

I think I'm ok with the current chat platform except that it should allow pvt messaging.

I see the chat box sometimes and don't find it at other times. Like I saw it 10min ago and don't see it now. Why?

We could try this, if people are interested:
http://www.icanhazchat.com/coffeehouse/textonly

I think it avoids some of the problems in the current chat options you guys seem to have tried. Only problem: the above chat cannot be embedded on this forum. If you guys like this and want to go with it, the link could be added in some prominent location on this forum.

Yes, I read in one of the posts above that this is a requirement for an alternative chat application. You can register for an account without giving any personal information including email address. All it needs is your chat handle (preferably same as your handle on this forum) and password.

C, HK had mentioned a few days ago that he found some alternative chat options - how about those?

The one I implemented was based on HK's suggestion. I am going to check out the one SP suggested as well.
