for someone who asked why it isn't india-natyam--

a) the bharat in bharathanattiyam doesn't refer to any country, but sage bharatha.
b) the name BN is very recent (1930) coined by the chennai tambrahm mamas and mamis to make it respectable for their daughters to take up something that was primarily an avocation of girls and women of ill repute. the older name is chatirattam. an older thread:
