Spelling bee winners 2015 - Again Desis...
...Someone should read Twitter comments....Last year there were nasty/racist comments when Indian kids won for the 15time or so in as many years...
This time the girl and the boy are the joint winners and they both come from neighboring states Kansas and Missouri from across the border.
This is becoming like the Kenyan domination of the Boston Marathon.

Exactly my first thought. They probably know each other for some years and perhaps even family friends. So who knows...

I don't think that winning the spelling bee or the boston marathon improves the world in anyway so I'm not impressed. There are better ways to spend one's time.

6 yrs spent on winning the spelling bee? how ridiculous is that. basically it means very little effort on the parents part (time-wise, academically or financially) and lot sof memorization and reading on the kids part. so much easier than teaching math and logical thinking to your kids, sitting with them going through ahsmes, doing an arangetram or learning ballet.
none of these kids are joining nasa or politics or studying AI, I can assure you.

Looks like you dont see things below the surface. Read the news article carefully. If all these kids do is just memorize and vomit, you are right. But, how come most of these go on to succeed at a very high level? It is not like they lag in their studies. Sure enough, they may not be great in sports (Duh...after all, these are Desis), but from 9th grade they will move on to something else.
Besides, in the course of spelling bee practice over 4 years, they need to familiarize themselves with various languages, hisotry, geography, culture, and you name it, and not to mention their skills at perseverance, handling pressure, determination, etc...
Just out of curiosity - what did you do while in school other than the usual Desi "Dance and/or carnautic music" routine ?

PN,
It takes a lot of grit to do well in Spelling Bee which makes road easy for these kids, since these kids has the essentials in them.

**LOL.. go ahead, put your kids through the bee way if you like.
Here are better ways to spend one's time at that age:
Debate Team - you obviously learn to write, analyze, finesse your arguments and speak in public. if someone finds a flaw in your presentation you don't hide, you read again, and come up with a better defense. 6 yrs of this and you're headed for a leadership position: e.g. president of your high school/frat/county etc. Even if you become a physician, having a background in debate means you can represent the physicians' interest in congress or be a leader at your hospital at an administrative level and the pay is there is upward of 700k annually for physicians in top-tier administrative positions.
Math team or Science projects- you engage with people who are interested in science and ideas and you practice math which the maerican public school system will not teach you but yo u will need it for any job anywhere. Science projects - read multiple papers, develop a hypothesis, gather data, learn to write a paper, work with the statistician etc. If you actually do it without your parents writing the paper for you it will take at least three years.
Sports - swimming or tennis if it's not possible to join a soccer or bb team. you are healthy and confident about your body and yourself.
Work with your Mom or Dad at their place of work - whether they are phlebotomists, run a grocery store, are MDs, or whatever - parents have a lot of skills and expertise at what they do and they can teach their kid how to do these things exposing them to the adult and financial world. This also strengthens the parent-child bond.
Travel - to India is just fine so long as you come out of your ivory tower and experience rural india and spend time with family.
**The spelling bee is for people who are lazy and not creative and live in remote areas with very little opportunity to have an exciting summer. My cousins grew up in the city and every summer was math camp, music camp, candystriper at the local hospital, tennis, volunteering at the lab etc. they all spell fine.
Just out of curiosity - what did you do while in school other than the usual Desi "Dance and/or carnautic music" routine ?
** I kissed a lot of frogs and I'm still doing that. I also read all the nancy drew, hardy boys and Agatha christies I could lay my hands on. And I already told you what award I got.

>>> I don't think it is an idiot-savant scenario. While I wouldn't sit around doing spelling practice for years, that activity may cultivate discipline. If you are pushing yourself to excel at it, you look for edges that will put you ahead. That likely involves learning a lot about root words and seeing connections. Those skills can be applied to other fields.pravalika nanda wrote:oh i see. well I'm really disturbed by this fascination with spelling. i don't find it intelligent at all. i think it's okay to spend a summer prepping for this but anything more than that is simply absurd. lazy parents and dumb kids.garam_kuta wrote:pravalika nanda wrote:garam_kuta wrote:Looks like all are getting jaded...they are sidelined

we are all less impressed by things we ourselves do well and more impressed by people with other skills that we don't have in abundance. so the spelling bee and its winners have never impressed me much. i may not be as good as these kids because i didn't specifically train years on end for it, but this comes naturally to me. no biggie.

yeah, i don't what the big deal is either. i took AP latin parts A and B for two years each. i basically read latin poetry which we translated literally but the way i learned it was i first read the poems and then the class would sit down and work on translations together. we were just 10 of us in the class. along the way we'd leanr how to write the singular and plural for the various declesnions: nominative, genitive dative etc. for instance the genitive of boy, men, war: puerorum/virorum/bellorum (of the boys/men/war) or nominative would just be puer/bellum/vir. actually this makes me wonder if vir also has roots in Sanskrit. it probably does.
anyhow, we read some passages by virgil but what i enjoyed was the poetry by Catullus and ovid. for instance one of the first things i learned to translate was this famous poem: vivamus mea lesbia atque amemus - it was fun to apply those metrics and translate it and figure out what he was saying, every poem was a little puzzle and when you finished translating it, it was so much fun to know the answer. once flamman put up some latin quotes and i was working on the translation and then he suddenly put up the answers. anyhow, now when i look at any word, i subconsciously am able to say if it is latin or greek or indina or yiddish. i don't spend time on it and i don't google it or read up on it, it's a subconscious intuitive thing. in fact i only realized it now cuz we're having this conversation.
the problem with spelling bees is it's really inconsequential how many Ses are in assessment or how to spell braggoddocio. spell check takes care of this nonsense and when you're talking no one knows that you don't know how to spell or punctuate. on the other hand if a manufacturer sends us 7 French catheters instead of 10 French or someone gives you 0.35% vitamin a cream instead of 0.035% that's not cool, you know.
winning a spelling bee isn't an accomplishment. it's a bloody waste of time and brains. it's so un-fun. when i have a kid and he turns 18, i'm going to buy him a ticket and say, "here son, prole = offspring, ferre = to bear, both from latin, think of humanity, go to mars and proliferate."
anyhow i got other fish to fry. later.

So you mean "Math Olympiad" is the way to go ?...or, is is Kumon ?
If a French guy did that to you it means only 2 things: 1 - He is a totally dumb guy (Of course he is French - so, what can you expect) and 2. he must have recognized you as someone who treats math like Spelling Bee.

about a third of the names on the list are neither chinese nor indian, but judeo christian meaning they are white or black. my point is that i am speculating that serious high school mathematical contests are a steeper ladder to climb, harder to conquer simply by repetition, and rely more heavily on innate talent which is probably spread more randomly in the general population. that is not to say that training and repetiton don't play a role, they do, but to a lesser extent than spelling bee like contests.

Hhahahaha...this is such a small world after all....
This Jagadeesan...I know his entire family....all four of his grandparents are mathematics professors. his father was the youngest PhD in computer Science from Cornell (at that time). His paternal grandparents lived 4 houses down the road from my house at coimbatore, and in fact, the grandfather was responsible for picking the site to build out house. BTW, his father came in #10 in CBSE 10th grade and #2 in CBSE 12th grade, and got JEE rank # 6.
There are few more interesting details but that will be too much info. In Short, this guy Ravi Jagadeesan has the genes to perform - that too in math - and the PERFECT environment to nurture that innate built in talent.
This is a fit case for the argument - a lot of it is in the genes. Why should he too excel in math?

about a third of the names on the list are neither chinese nor indian, but judeo christian meaning they are white or black. my point is that i am speculating that serious high school mathematical contests are a steeper ladder to climb, harder to conquer simply by repetition, and rely more heavily on innate talent which is probably spread more randomly in the general population. that is not to say that training and repetiton don't play a role, they do, but to a lesser extent than spelling bee like contests.
If you take out the jewish (another minority) names, it is even more depressing.
a better measure would be the fraction of students who participate and attempt these competitions who actually win the top spots. by that measure, and i am guessing here, judeo christians are probably doing just fine. in fact better than fine. it should be no surprise that indians and chinese aspire to such competitions in greater proportions than the judeo christian population.

Wait...it is not one of minority. We are clubbing "groups" for various segments.
Black for basketball
Cubans for Baseball
Jews for business
Whites for cattle ranching
Kenyans for track and field
why not Indians for spelling bee ????
Let us put a quota for any activity then...

Oh no....dont post such things.. It is not "appropriate" to single out a particular race.
I have said this before and repeat it again - Nth time...
Education, family, environment, and "Chances" (luck) all combine to decide the success of a person.
Even if the Govt pumps and dumps money into education, Blacks and soon hispanics will not improve. Bcz their broken families and economic deficiency exposes these kids for 16 of the 24 hours.... It takes sacrifice on the part of parents to enable their kids to gain. It is a zero sum game. Blacks and soon hispanics lack the "sacrifice and suffering" part for the cause of their kids.
That is an important factor in the success of Koreans and Indians. Vietnamese boat people who are uneducated and equally poor raise their kids on par with Chinkus and Indians....
Why?....The blacks, hispanics, and everyone else should study the vietnamese and Laotians (not Indians or Chinese, who have different background).

No not at all... The reason(s) fall under the "cannot reveal" category. I am calling them tomorrow anyway and will try to see this kid next weekend.
