Andhra University Empty Andhra University

Post by Vakavaka Pakapaka Mon Jul 06, 2015 8:37 pm

...... When I was a high school student, Andhra University was viewed as a quality university for chemistry and physics. Those days, there was no comparable university in Telangana and Osmania university was viewed with suspicion. The only other premier universities in the South were U Madras and IISc. Looks like AU is rebuilding its reputation. Unfortunately, it seems, many in India don't know much about AU's history. This perception related problem has lowered its rank in the country.

All my family studied in AU. And if I had grown up in India that's where I would have studied as well. I think one of the NP winners, CV Raman was also at AU.

The AU campus is rather grand, the adminstrative and residential blocks are planned out nicely with good ventilation and greenery. The buildings themselves are very old-world and british and elegant. Next to the sea and the navy port and the bustling city, it's simply one of the oldest and best campuses I've visited. My uncle and his friends took me to a library on a ship that was in transit. This entire ship was full of books, they left me to sit in a corner in the children's section while they explored the rest of the library. It used to be so safe in those days. Vizag still is, I think. I don't know what the situation is after the bifurcation. Is KGH part of it? I've visited KGH as well, but who likes hospitals?

** my uncle was studying at AU at the time and the crew had invited the students and families to visit the "floating library."

KGH is no longer related to AU (it used to be when I was a student). Medical colleges in AP are under a Medical University now.

AU was great for chemistry and physics. It also has a great nuclear physics department. They have an excellent research culture and many publish in international journals (not common in most Indian universities).  Most of the Pharma companies in Hyd are owned by alumni of AU.
