the state of chennai
every time i visit this place, it seems more and more alien to me and not in a good way. development has happened very haphazardly and is getting worse with every passing year. they have only two solutions to mitigate traffic problems -- one way streets and flyovers. flyovers obscure every character-defining structure in this city. the most egregious is the ugly flyover that hides all of the music academy building. such an iconic structure completely hidden behind a monstrosity! and the smell of raw untreated sewage is pervasive, and i am not convinced it's only because of the recent floods. the city's sewage system is bursting at the seams and every other street has some sewage work going on. no permanent solutions; they seem to be going from putting out one fire to another. chennai is no city for pedestrians. all the beloved tree-lined streets i use to walk have been narrowed by encroaching shops, parked motor cycles and bicycles, and the space that remains has been ruined by cars that have no concern for the safety of pedestrians. every nook and corner of the city is filled with seemingly unplanned apartment complexes that seem like a blight on the landscape of the city. a city i once knew as relatively clean, easy-paced, and somewhat tastefully developed today stands ruined. the one haven that still remains is the IIT campus. somehow the folks in charge have kept the ugliness out. i feel terribly sad.

The title could read
-- Chennai, transitioning to a NorthIndian city in SouthIndia.
-- NorthIndia creeping in SouthIndia
-- Chennai, gravitating North

Exactemente.... This is what I have been saying for a while.... Usman Road, Luz Corner, Alwarpet, Adayar flyover are examples... etc..etc.. This is same even in small cities like Coimbatore. My cousin bought a flat in a suburb and it was a breath of fresh air - no signals, rural road, and mountains in the backdrop. Told him to enjoy the atmosphere and in another 5 to 10 years, all would disappear. Bangalore was simply the worst. Garden City - it is simply a tragedy.
In short, the places you associated with are gone. People you associated with talk differently with a whole new set of views and values.
Guess signs of old age... when the mind finds a little difficult and slow to adjust and digest the changes.
