Weathermen tend to overpredict in recent years as people tend to blame if things turn out to be worse (hardly anyone will blame them even if there is no snow at all). It saves some face for the news channel.
more than the snow worse is the rain/snow mixed regions like MA, upstate NY, etc. Snow, sleet, slush, etc..will be bad for driving - especially for women (and Dalits).

Re: How much snow?
I agree, in general, they tend to hype it. But Last Wednesday, everyone (including local officials) screwed up big time. We got about an inch of snow during evening rush hour, everyone was so consumed by this historical blizzard and promptly ignored it and didn't even bother to treat major arteries let alone side roads. It was a mess, about 1500 accidents, people were stranded for hours, took them 6,7 hours to get home, which normally is a 40-45 minutes commute. I myself was lucky to reach home without wrecking my car, had a close encounter.Marathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:confuzzled dude wrote:Meteorologists are saying 2 feet in DC area.

P.S. You're completely losing it; take a deep breath. Criticizing RSS/BJP is a good thing for India & BJP itself, in the long run.

The mid-Atlantic states (and DC) suck at handling snowfall. Good luck to them! Maybe they need to invite a few officials from ND, SD or MN to guide them.

not all. PA and NY do just fine. upstate NY often gets more snow than northern new england. and PA has the lake effect snow from erie. they're quite used to it. it's mostly just DC, delaware, virginia, and likely NJ who screw up.

Re: How much snow?
A thing I learnt about weather forecast - When you try to find the chance of rain in your area, and weatherman says 30% chance of rain - what does it mean?
30% chance that it will rain, and 70% it wont.
What the weatherman means is that 30% of your geographic area will have rain.
A subtle difference, but an important one to know.

Re: How much snow?
it means if you look at historical days which had similar weather (temp, humidity, atmospheric pressure etc.), it has rained 30% of those days.

I was about to respond to TS but you did already - correctly.
Another way to look at this is "if there are 100 days like today, it is likelytake 40% to rain on 30 days.
I usually take seriously 40% or higher and not ride my motorcycle.

Re: How much snow?
i have also read about that geographical theory, and used to wonder if that's correct.
my home and work is less than 15 miles away. on low percent forecast days, you do see a scattered pattern. would be raining at work and complete sunshine at home, and vice versa. or at neither place but rained somewhere in patches in the middle.
