UP govt to give Rs 50,000 monthly pension to Yash Bharti awardees
Yash Bharti is one of the highest state-level awards conferred for excellence in literature, fine arts, classical music, folk music and sports. (each awardee already gets Rs. 5 lakh at the time of first receiving the Yash Bharti award along with a plaque and citation).
At a time when a number of litterateurs across the country, including from Uttar Pradesh, have announced their decisions to return their awards, the Akhilesh Yadav government has decided to give Rs 50,000 monthly pension to the recipients of Yash Bharti and Padma awards.
While Padma awards are conferred by the central government, Yash Bharti is one of the highest state-level awards conferred for excellence in literature, fine arts, classical music, folk music and sports.
“We have decided to give Rs 50,000 pension to all the recipients of Yash Bharti awards,” Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said after a cabinet meeting where the decision was taken.
When asked whether the pension would continue even if the award was returned, Akhilesh said, “Pension will be given to the recipients. The situation of returning of award will never come in Samajwadi regime,” he said.
The Yash Bharti award was instituted by Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav during his tenure as Chief Minister in 1994. It was,
however, discontinued during BJP and BSP regimes. After the Samajwadi Party came to power in 2013, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav revived the award with a hike in the prize money from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 11 lakh.
This year, the government conferred the award on 56 individuals. Apart from renowned singers, dancers, vocalists, actors, and sportsmen, the award was also given to 80-year-old Darshan Singh Yadav, who has remained the village head (pradhan) of Mulayam’s native village Saifai since 1972.
In another major decision, the cabinet approved a proposal to directly recruit as gazetted officers sportsmen from the state who have won medals in international events. For this, 49 posts in different departments have been identified.
