The Daily Mail, a famous UK tabloid, reported the event of Novak Djokovic meeting Deepika Padukone in Los Angeles, but they committed one grave mistake: they referred to Deepika as ‘Female Companion’ and ‘Leggy Brunette’.

Yeah, that’s right!

The pictures of Novak Djokovic and Deepika Padukone surfaced on the internet on Wednesday when both of them met for dinner. The Daily Mail reported this incident and failed to recognise Deepika Padukone.

Here’s what was reported:
“The world number one tennis player appeared to have had a great night as he was pictured exiting the bar – popular among LA’s A-lister set – in the dark hours of the evening with a female companion. The leggy brunette slipped her towering figure into a flirty frock which was decorated with a floral print and skimmed her knees.”

in the second news/celebrity gossip item linked above, the one from filmfare, notice how carefully dressed the padukone woman is: shaved, stockinged and (probably) perfumed, her face caked with a shipload of make-up, and her hair done in a special hairdo, as if she had spent the afternoon at a hair stylist's.

djokovic, in contrast, looks deliberately scruffy in work clothes: jeans and a levis-type work shirt, and unshaven. underdressing is a style that came into vogue in the u.s. a couple of decades ago among american men, to perhaps convey the message that that they don't make the effort to appear well dressed to/for any mortal woman.

I suspect that neither the indian woman nor the tennis player recognizes these social or sartorial dynamics, for the woman is happy enough to be dated by a european man, and eastern european tennis players adopt american styles indiscriminately, witness the number of them who wear baseball caps - often backwards - on the tennis.court.

Rev Iyer dude:

A lot of conceptual mistakes in your analysis and not to mention misunderstandings of the Indian, American, and EASTERN European outlook.

it depends on the companion/host/'inviter'- not looking sharp can easily be misconstrued as an insult; kind of projects intentional lack of regards/respect/good etiquette/culture/demeanor for the host, unless the host is kind of bohemian himself/herself.

underscore, it does not matter if the underdressed person is the inviter or the invited.

the underdresser seeks to send the well-dressed person the message that he doesn't want to make the effort to dress up for the other because he does not value the other or the occasion sufficiently.

the decision to not dress well is essentially a result of hubris.

you lost an opportunity to make an original comment on an interesting socio-sartorial phenomenon that was displayed by padukone and djokovic. nitpicking my comment won't redeem you.

lots of folks prefer the most comfortable clothing without any hidden agenda -it's just as simple as that.
