Re: Your Favourite Books/Best Books
It's hard to list just a few books. Here are a few that come to mind immediately, in no particular order.
- Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond. For its sweeping thesis that neatly explains much of human development since the dawn of civilization.
- The History of the World by HG Wells. For its broad but brief (and necessarily superficial) view of the history of our species.
- A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. For a wonderful portrayal of India at a critical time in his modern history.
- The Karamazov Brothers by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. For his excellent storytelling and the elaborate sidetracks (e.g. the discussion between the two brothers about god and the Holy Inquisition)
- Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. For the treatment of the conditions of the ordinary people, and the portrayal of some excellent characters.
- Kanyasulkam by Gurajada Apparao. For its loving but brutally honest portrayal of our society and its malpractices.
- The Demon-Haunted World by Carl Sagan. For its excellent treatment of the most common "supernatural phenomena" cited by people.
- The History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russell. For its comprehensive and approachable treatment of some difficult subject matter.
- The Rational Optimist by Matt Ridley. For its unconventional but mostly on-point take on the nature of progress, innovation and prosperity.

1. Mark Twain was an equal opportunity hater, IMO and that's not the creiteria I used to pick my favorite book. Doesn't have to be yours. Please respond to the OP's question if you want to really add to this thread.
2. *shudder* I won't shake your hand - so don't worry; relax maadi.
3. I see your CHandle against "Latest Posts" on every thread - what's with the urge to respond to every thread though you have nothing worthwhile to add? Kyon?!

yeah, and you are doomed if you are stuck with a guy who loves Decorators, and you still can't find your way out of them.
