The translators Dasgupta and Bhirdikar were surprised when I told them that as a young girl, I had seen a photograph of a 90-year old Alladiya Khan with the then up and coming star of Carnatic music. M. S. Subbulakshmi had recounted how she had visited Khan Saheb in Bombay to offer her respects. "Seated on a raised platform in his house, dressed in pure white, he was an emaciated but dignified figure." The Ustad's eyes had lit up when she sang Pantuvarali (chosen because of its closeness to the Hindustani Purya Dhanasri). When she stopped, he seemed to continue it in a soft humming. Placing a hand over her head, he declared that she would become one of the greatest singers of the Indian tradition. M.S. added in tender recollection, "It is the blessings of such great artistes that have been my strength through life."
