when the dave brubeck quartet visited madras
this year's sangItha kalAnidhi is thiruchi sankaran and on the occasion of honouring him, the hindu asked him to write a short history of carnatic music in north america (http://www.thehindu.com/arts/music/article2764012.ece).
sankaran mentions an interesting tidbit in the article about the dave brubeck quartet visiting madras in the 50s and joe morello the drummer having a jam session with sankaran's guru pazhani subramaniam pillai. that prompted me to look for recordings of their sessions recorded by AIR on the web. while i didn't succeed in finding music, i unearthed some interesting pictures that those with an interest in jazz or CM or both will enjoy. some of the pictures (especially names of instruments) are mislabeled. the mridangam is identified as the tabla and the vINai as the sitar.

only balachandar amongst the indian musicians is identified. but there is a picture of the jam session sankaran mentions of morello and pillai. i also spotted semmangudi srinivasa iyer in one of the pics.

it's amazing that this stuff preceded the song that came to define the brubeck quartet, the historically important take five!
