my younger tried to bribe me today by saying that he had read 4 pages of rushdie's "imaginary homelands" and that he had liked it! i told him it was a collection of essays on subjects and novels he was probably unfamiliar with. he became dogged. he claimed that he was aware of satanic verses (suggesting that it was a splendid novel and that i should recommend it to him). i told him to read 1 page of satanic verses. he did and he collapsed.

ha ha ha. younger verbatim: he's talking of lightning then plane crash of ai420 and dharammmmmm and vagera!
younger has come to senses. he has suggested that the best way to read this novel is to read the words rapidly and then wait for the holistic sense to arrive. bole to the gestalt.

i have many questions. where is the bribe in this transaction? if he told you he read 4 pages, why didn't you ask him what it was about, instead of telling him what you thought it was about? why was he waiting for a recommendation from you to read a book he was curious about anyway?

Re: ha ha
i did ask him what the 4 pages were about. he said they were about mera joota hai japani. and that his style was comic. and that he thought he would enjoy reading the "book" more. then my intervention.
the bribe lies in the fact that my collection of books has all of rushdie's books and they (my kids) know i like him (or used to).
anyway, i have punished him with calcutta chromosome, to be read in 3 days flat, by amitav ghosh. i have similarly bribed him with the prospect that there is a scene in the book in "sutton and sons india pvt. ltd." shop in russel street, where the kids often shop.

oh, he read "imaginary homelands" in his school library (speaks highly of his school library -- in my time the only books my school library had were the encyclopedia americana and tons of books on christian lore). he will probably continue reading "imaginary homelands" in school. i will not recommend MC to him till he is in class 12 (but he won't have time to read then -- so college it will be). i did give him "haroun and the sea of stories" a year or so ago but he turned it down after a few pages.
