A GED "graduate", who scored in the 98 percentile in most of her subjects, technically smarter then 80-90% of all kids who graduate with a legit high school diploma.

Hard to compare the two. But, the GED graduate is likely to be seriously considered for admission by many top universities. In all likely hood, the GED graduate is sure to have other qualities in his/her resume which will provide a great essay.
