Dos & dont's for Hindus
Take shower before & after (cold water)
Throw all the food prepared prior to the eclipse
Don't eat or prepare food during the eclipse
Chant grahana peeta parihara shloka
Women in menstruation can take showers but can't partake in pujas.

Re: Are you eclipse equipped?
Just saw the eclipse. Not as exciting as a total eclipse, but was good to see.
I still vividly remember the total eclipse I saw in 1995 from the summit of a hill near Barkakana in Jharkhand.

guruvu-gAru, dharma sandEham. Are observant Hindus allowed to access the internet during a grahaNam? Are you supposed to do shuddhi for the computer with darbha pullalu, before, after, or both before and after the grahaNam?Vakavaka Pakapaka wrote:What do monomaniacs do - throw stones and spit at the Sun and start crying for the Moon?........confuzzled dude wrote:Dos & dont's for Hindus

They didn't have computers. At least they were right about not looking at the Sun during grahanam.Idéfix wrote:guruvu-gAru, dharma sandEham. ya so as it turns out, I am not very good at prevention and stuff. when I am in the flow, I flow. time for some self introspection there. I think I looked at the sun with one eye for about a second when I was trying to look through a filter. and when I was trying to take a selfie, my phone case was reflecting way too much. My immediate experience was like how it would be if I looked at the regular sun, so hoping it was temporary. I was about to go out for more adventure when the eclipse was at its peak, but XB called me for something, and I decided to stop chasing the eclipse and talked with him with my eyes closed. After frantic googling, I find that even if I am feeling ok now (I have just a couple of dark spots in my blurry vision, and my eyes are still red), I could still have some damage. So now, I will wait for 2-3 weeks. if my vision is ok, I will thank XB for saving my eye sight. If it's not so ok, guess I will still thank him for not making it worse.

If it's only the phone's reflection, you are probably fine no matter how strong that reflection was.t w wrote:t w wrote:jes... prevention is my choice of weapon, heh.

Re: Are you eclipse equipped?
I wonder how many liberals boycotted this racist eclipse.
On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will arrive mid-morning on the coast of Oregon. The moon’s shadow will be about 70 miles wide, and it will race across the country faster than the speed of sound, exiting the eastern seaboard shortly before 3 p.m. local time. It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people.

oh ok, i think i read somewhere that reflection can also be damaging to the eye. Also, i accidentally saw the sun directly too a couple of times, but barely for a second, which i read is not so unsafe. when i was looking at the reflection off my phone, and even though i was squinting all through it, at one point i blinked and saw the white bright image of the home button, so that was my cue to go back inside; and it was dark, painful, burning, red, teary and blurry since then. took me a few hours to get over it. not to mention it triggered my migraine. had to take medicines and rest a while when i got home. But then, in general, i am very sensitive to light. I can't have any light straight my eyes, even it's a dim tubelight. In mornings too i try to go around my business in dark as much as i can. Guess that's why i overreacted.

hopefully the good kind of filter, lol. But i saw the sun directly when i was looking out of the window and didn't know how much to lean. Then it was just the stupid quest to take pics.

This is just plain stupid. If the author wanted to make a point about racism, there are a lot of straightforward ways in which she could have made that point. This article is an indicator of a common mistake: to think that the universe revolves around us. We are insignificant blips in the grand scheme of things.silvermani wrote:I wonder how many liberals boycotted this racist eclipse.

so by the end of that night my eyes got puffier than usual, and one eye hurt a lot. Kids said the area under that one also looked bruised. Could not sleep well coz of discomfort. The pain subsided after popping in an advil next morning. Also, found out another friend who had exactly the same case as mine. Strained the eyes too much when trying to take a selfie or looking through the glasses, taking them off and on. Next day google also confirmed how a lot of people had headaches and strained eyes after the eclipse. Lack of sleep was first taken care of by strong coffee in the morning and going to bed early in the night. All normal today, finally.
Turns out, when taking selfies I should have reduced my phone's brightness to near zero. Duh. That would not have resolved the other reflecting parts of the phone, but atleast sun's image (that I was trying to look at) would not have made me squint so much. Will keep that in mind for later. When checking out the settings on my phone, I finally fixed another issue of nighttime phone screen glare. Set up an automatic night shift on my phone, so now it's comparatively dimmer at night.

Re: Are you eclipse equipped?
They distributed free NASA provided eclipse glasses at local libraries throughout US. What happened to googling stuff? We got 2. Used it, over the iPhone camera, to take some pictures. Its an experience, and experiences must be cherished far more than a 75" TV or a BMW, IMHO.
TW - What you did was plain stupid, worse than a 15 year old's negligence! I am sorry to say it this way, but what are you trying to do? Get blind? What if your child did it the way you did? Fkkin Stupid.
Anyways, I did try it with iPhone, a SLR, even with video camera using the lens covered with the eclipse glasses. Got a couple pictures which show the sun as a crescent moon, only via SLR and iPhone.
My daughter never came out shunting me out to even suggest her to try it, but I'm sure my son had a life time memory.
