Root cause of anger is the overwhelming desire: when fulfilled, it imposes ego and arrogance that feeds into intolerance and anger; failing to achieve leads to realization of self-inadequacy and that is inflammatory. So renouncing greedy desires is the best deterrent to anger, and the sure path to peace/happiness.

Here are some real stories from what I have seen in my life:

A and B were very good friends. A back-stabbed B. A got angry. B said - You will not be punished FOR your anger, but BY your anger.

A married B. A back-stabbed B. A got angry. B said - You will not be punished FOR your anger, but BY your anger.

A and B promised to be married. A back-stabbed B. A got angry. B said - You will not be punished FOR your anger, but BY your anger.

You get the point?

Without any kind of CONSCIENCE in a human, such quotes are mere excuses.

Personally, I do not talk about anger - I simply say - Shoot such morally corrupt folks, who do WRONG, and then try to teach the folks who they have angered wrongly.

I wonder why Bharathiyar Said 'Rowthiram Pazhagu'.   Did he mean to say 'practice or show Anger but donot get angry'? 

Also, in another poem,

Anger and hunger have a link. When I am hungry, I am edgy and more likely to lose my temper. When my belly is full, I am satisfied, in a happier frame of mind and less likely to lose my temper.

No kidding. These days, because of Internet, the devotees / followers of some long-gone religious / spiritual leaders and even the present swamis, gurus and babas are crediting many good sounding quotes (previously unheard of or from other obscure  sources) to them (swamis, babas, gurus etc.).
