Net neutrality is about to die, thanks to Ajit Pai and Donald Trump
If you want real high-speed internet at home, how many viable options do you have in your neighborhood? The answer for most Americans is: one. Some industries are natural monopolies and this is one of them.
Now imagine if your internet service provider could start charging you different prices for access to different websites. If you want to reach Netflix, you have to pay them $10 a month extra, and may be more if you watch more movies on Netflix, but you can access your provider's own streaming service as part of the bundled price you pay for internet service. Imagine that they are allowed to selectively slow down the speeds at which you can download content from certain services; if you want to stream from Netflix it is always slow. Imagine a world where your internet service provider can tell websites that the websites have to pay them money so that they don't block users like you from accessing those websites.
That's the world that the FCC under Trump wants to create. They are on the verge of killing net neutrality, one of the fundamental principles of the internet. They want deregulate companies like Comcast, which operate very much like monopolies in large swathes of the country. This move will enable those monopolies to fleece customers, and it will stifle competition from startups that can't afford to pay big fees for ensuring access.
There is no good justification for this move. It is a blatant example of regulatory capture.

That is a good idea. I already wrote my rep and senators. Here are a few other things that people interested in saving net neutrality can do.
1. Donate to the following organizations:
If you are a frequent Amazon shopper, you can set EFF or Demand Progress as your preferred charity. At no extra cost to you, Amazon will donate money to them when you shop on Amazon.
2. Write to the FCC.
If you need help tracking down your Congressman and Senators, find your House Representative and your Senators here. I plan to call my Congresswoman and Senators a few times each before the FCC vote next month. Calling is more effective than email.
You can find more information about this here.

If you care about net neutrality and have five minutes to spare, please go to https://www.battleforthenet.com/, enter your phone number, and press the call button. The system will automatically connect you to your representatives' offices and you can leave them messages. The website will even give you a nice prompt for what to say.

Here is another good way to contact your elected representatives in Congress. Text the word RESIST to 50409 and you will get instructions to complete your message. You can do this as often as you like.

Sorry about the disruptions over the last hour or so as I was trying to figure out how add a banner on top encouraging people to support net neutrality. It is now done. This banner will remain until Dec 14.

Here is one more thing you can do to voice your support for net neutrality. Please sign this petition.
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/do-not-repeal-net-neutrality
And this petition asking the White House to remove Ajit Pai as the head of the FCC. Ajit Pai was a corporate lawyer for Verizon. He is now trying to kill net neutrality in order to help companies like Verizon.

Just curious. How many petitions like this which have gotten required signatures were really effective and acted upon by WH or by Govt? Even if it gets more than enough votes(signatures), the ultimate decision will be by DJT or others?
