FIR filed against reporter who exposed Aadhar scam
What a disgrace. Being penalized for doing good journalism.
------
A deputy director of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has registered an FIR against The Tribune newspaper and its reporter Rachna Khaira following her report on how anonymous sellers over WhatsApp were allegedly providing access to Aadhaar numbers for a fee.
The FIR also names Anil Kumar, Sunil Kumar and Raj, all of whom were mentioned in The Tribune report as people Khaira contacted in the course of her reporting.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Alok Kumar confirmed that an FIR had been registered and an investigation launched. The FIR has been lodged with the Crime Branch’s cyber cell under IPC Sections 419 (punishment for cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document), as well Section 66 of the IT Act and Section 36/37 of the Aadhaar Act.
When contacted, The Tribune’s editor-in-chief Harish Khare refused to comment on the FIR. In the FIR, the complainant, B M Patnaik, who works with UIDAI’s logistics and grievance redressal department, states: “An input has been received through The Tribune dated January 3, 2018, that the ‘The Tribune purchased’ a service being offered by anonymous sellers over WhatsApp that provided unrestricted access to details for any of the more than 1 billion Aadhaar numbers created in India thus far.”
The FIR details how the reporter got in touch with the other persons named in the FIR and goes on to state: “The above-mentioned persons have unauthorisedly accessed the Aadhaar ecosystem in connivance of the criminal conspiracy… The act of the aforesaid involved persons is in violation of (the various sections mentioned in the FIR)… Hence, an FIR needs to be filed at the cyber cell for the said violation.”

Re: FIR filed against reporter who exposed Aadhar scam
Arun Shourie got a reporter to buy a woman in MP to show human trafficking. Her name was Kamala. Even Indira Govt didn’t charge Ashwini Sarin, the reporter, with kidnapping. If intention is purely journalistic, no crime.

Re: FIR filed against reporter who exposed Aadhar scam
I am not surprised that this concept is hard for idiotic retards like Doucheman and his ilk to grasp. A journalist does not have permission to rob a bank in order to prove how easy it is to rob a bank. Or, to rape a woman in order to prove how easy it is to rape. Idiot retards!

Re: FIR filed against reporter who exposed Aadhar scam
New Delhi: The Aadhaar issuer, which had lodged a police complaint against The Tribune newspaper and its reporter Rachna Khaira for a report on the sale of Aadhaar data, appeared to backtrack on Monday after a tweet by its minister.
On January 4, the newspaper had published a report saying racketeers were selling access to Aadhaar data for Rs 500, which would enable buyers to open fake bank accounts or get mobile connections issued in someone else's name.
In a complaint to Delhi police's crime branch the following day, the Unique Identification Authority of India accused the newspaper, reporter and three alleged racketeers named in the report of impersonation, cheating, forgery and violation of the Aadhaar Act and the IT Act.
The police converted the complaint into an FIR the same day but named only "unknown" people as accused. When the move came to light on Sunday, it triggered an avalanche of condemnation from the Editors Guild and several other journalists' associations, which alleged an attack on media freedom.
Police sources clarified on Sunday night that those named in the complaint were not being seen as accused but would be questioned.
On Monday, Ravi Shankar Prasad, who heads the electronics and IT ministry to which the UIDAI is attached, tweeted: "Govt is fully committed to freedom of press as well as to maintaining security & sanctity of #Aadhaar for India's development. FIR is against unknown. I've suggested @UIDAI to request Tribune & its journalist to give all assistance to police in investigating real offenders."
Soon, the UIDAI posted a tweet that suggested it no longer considered the newspaper or the reporter, whom it had accused of several crimes, "the real culprits".
