What here referred as Kulam is clan/group/caste or his/her associations?

நீர் அளவே ஆகுமாம் நீர் ஆம்பல்; தான் கற்ற

தவத்து அளவே ஆகுமாம் தான் பெற்ற செல்வம்
குலத்து அளவே ஆகும் குணம்
விளக்கம்
அல்லிப்பூ நீரின் அளவு எவ்வளவு இருக்கிறதோ அவ்வளவே வளரும். நாம் கற்ற நூல்களின் அளவே நம் அறிவு. முற்பிறப்பில் செய்த புண்ய கார்யங்களின் அளவே நாம் இப்போது அனுபவிக்கும் செல்வம். குணம் நாம் தோன்றிய குலத்தின் அளவே.
Transliteration
Niir alave akumam nir aampal than kattra
nuul alave akumam nun arivu melait
tavatthu alave akumam taan petra celvam
kulattu alave akum kunam
English Translation
The lily rises to the level of water it floats in
One’s knowledge is based on the books he reads
One’s wealth depends on his previous birth’s merits
One’s character depends on the class he belongs to

The meaning of "Kulam" (a Sanskrit word) is 'clan', which perhaps might have got twisted as 'association' (a slight variation from the Sanskrit meaning) when "kulam" moved to Tamil.
