NEW DELHI: Newly-wed brides in Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya district have raised an outcry after discovering that the ornaments they were given at their mass wedding were fake.

In a letter written to the District Magistrate, the brides alleged they were cheated by the administration, who gave out anklets and toe rings made of iron, instead of the promised silver ornaments.

Under the Mukhyamantri Samoohik Vivaah Yojana, women from poor families who get married in a state-sponsored mass wedding receive various gifts like clothes and simple jewellery. CM Yogi Adityanath had said that the government spends Rs 35,000 on every couple that gets hitched at these community marriages.

The double-dealing came to light when some women had the ornaments examined by goldsmiths, who pronounced them to be fake and made of iron.

Calling the incident a scam, the victims have demanded an investigation.
