I was thinking about her actually. Most of my childhood fantasies revolved around her. She was trying to enter commercial films when I was attaining puberty and she had posed semi-nude in a glam mag back then.

I don't know when I stopped fantasizing about her but I did completely when I saw her interview in youtube last year. The person did not match the Shabana Azmi I knew. Her good looks left my mind to make way for her real personality.

it was sorta opposite for me. when i was younger i viewed her as mostly a good and intellectual artist, not a knock out. I mean my earliest memory of her is with parveen babi and neetu singh in Amar Akbar Anthony. What else was I supposed to think anyway. It's only when i was older and watched older movies did i realize she was very pretty in her own right.

Another association i have with her is when i watched a murder mystery movie of hers, in which i think kanwaljeet was her husband and naseeruddin shah was the killer... I specifically remember a scene between her and kanwaljeet where she sits across his lap facing him, while chatting. I remember liking it a lot then, coz she did it naturally, and it was not to tantalize or anything. Just how a cute couple would cuddle. I guess subconsciously, it sorta became a symbol of natural playful intimacy between a couple to me. I was thinking the other day, that while I don't explicitly remember this scene all the time, i most likely have done this with whoever i have been in a close relationship with...

so that was my shabana azmi story...

i think her biggest appeal was in her face, the expressions, and the thoughts behind her face.

I still remember reading her interviews as a kid, and how influenced i would be by them. Like I remember how she had summarized her affair with Shekhar Kapoor (not sure if it was the same timeline with him) as - what you like at 17 might change entirely by the time you are 20, because by now you are a wiser young woman looking at your future, so whatever appealed at 17 may no longer appeal to you now'. I realized how it had applied to me too at the same age. And I use that quote many times when talking to people, especially youngsters. At the same time i was amazed how the two of them had a maturity to collaborate together for a movie later.

I also remember reading her headline once - life begins at 40, and how she will marry at 40, and later she did.

But the cutest and wittiest line was from Javed Akhtar once. Someone asked him to recount how and when did he first meet Shabana. And he said something like, 'arre janab, the question is not how we met, the question is how come we didn't meet earlier. We are so alike, our thoughts match so well, so i am surprised how we didn't connect any earlier then when we did'. That said so much...

while i am writing it here, might as well add this... in one of her interviews on her dad, Kaifi Azmi, she had said - 'well, he is from UP. And people of UP are just very confident. They just think they are superior to everybody else, so that's the attitude with which they approach everything (may not be exactly her words, but how i interpreted it)'. At the time i was dealing with the UP side of my family, and after i watched this interview on tv, so many things suddenly made sense, and helped in dealing stuff better.

I don't think she was pretty. I fantasized about her only because I had seen her semi-nudes; emi-nudes of moving, talking women were hard to come by then. But after I grew up, looks and figure, both, stopped mattering to me and beauty existed only in the personality of girls and women; so I would shuffle the old collection of women in my mind for those moments where a body was absolutely necessary. It is a bit hard to fantasize now because it is a finite list that can only shrink each year, not grow.

Yes, I can understand that informal, intimate-posture thing. That was definitely the other reason that kept me fixated on her as a young man because she delivered those moments in her artsy movies. I remember when I was in college, I saw an Indian couple in the reading room of my dorm. The girl was feeding chips to the boy and she said, "khao na baba..." And that scene, I don't know why, got stuck in my memory as the closest expression of intimacy.

Actually she bullshits a lot. I found her a distasteful and stuck-up: the interview

I haven't seen a turn off like her. Ruined my mental collection.

There are all sorts of people in this world. Think of the most unimaginable combination and I will give you an example. A rich man who lives in the ghetto? present sir! A genius with no education? Present sir! A celibate priest with multiple wives? Present Sir! An amazing actress with no brains? Shabana Azmi! vagera...

will watch the interview later, but yeah, i think after 2000 or so, she began taking a stand against the hard liners, and unfortunately became one herself.

But in her younger years too, i think her honest smugness was part of her appeal too, atleast to me. I don't care for arrogance if it can be matched with talent. I remember when Smita Patil had passed away, and she was interviewed on TV and asked if she can now reign as she no longer has her arch rival. she admitted to being rivals with her, but also said how she relished that rivalry, and it was a big motivation to one-up each other with work, and now she will miss her a lot, coz that kick to do better is now gone; and this is not a 'victory' how the interviewer was trying to say, but victory would be for them to keep competing and beating each other with work.

I wish I had seen Smita Patil's semi-nude back then. I am forgetting the name of the glossy that carried Azmi's pics -- not Cine Blitz or Stardust or Filmfare. It was a newly launched one in 1982/83.

Hmm, what glossy could it be, i used to read almost all of them (from a young age - that's the advantage/disadvantage when you are the youngest in a family by years)... I remember once I was fixated with Rekha's photo shoot in a magazine, i think they were black and white, and I also found a red pen, so i colored all the pics of hers giving her red lips, blush, and eye shadow, and bindi, and i think maang too. Forgetting how old I was, maybe 6 or 7 years old.

Was it Femina?

Rekha was highly photogenic but she was hardly nude. My other objects of desire were the vamps -- Bindu, Aruna Irani. And Dimple (skimpily dressed in Sagar).

It wasn't Femina. It was a newly launched but short lived film magazine.

I lost 2 kgs over Holi! I really don't know how!

I just bumped into a two year old pic. It looks as if I have lost weight since (does it look so to you?) but not as per the scale. As per the scale I weigh 1 kg more. Maybe I need an atomic scale for accuracy. Or maybe fat aggregates asymptotically (I don't know what that means but sounds like a reasonable explanation for these anomalies).

dunno about weight loss, can't judge from pics. i just trust the scale. Sometimes you lose inches before you lose pounds, so maybe that's what's going on?

I am currently at my peak weight, but when i was at this weight the last time, i was 30-31. I guess i still had a lot of collagen, or younger cellular structure or whatever it is that keeps everything up and tight. Dunno what it was, but at the same weight that time i looked like a giant bursting out of my clothes. even my face was broad and fat. Now, probably everything has thinned down or is loose or whatever, but everyone tells me i don't look as overweight as i say i am, and in my mind i get even more depressed. Or maybe they just go by my now thinned down face. Or maybe I have just learned to dress and hide it better now *shrug*

Bungalow or penthouse. hmm. Not sure. Depends on location, taxes/maintenance fee, utilities and overall cost of the house. And if raising kids, or living alone at an older age. I am a small town gal, and here too i most lived in suburbia. Meaning, it's never been a 'high-rise-building-life' for me. But i guess when i am older and an empty nester, i wouldn't mind a pent house setting in a gated community.

I think this gaining weight but looking like you've lost weight is a getting old thing. I did lose a lot of weight but i don't think i have gained it back in the same areas.

I'm still not sure whether to buy a bungalow or a penthouse. I'll ask someone else. Somebody must be having an answer i am sure. Maybe my bank manager does.
