BIMARU expansion and contraction..... Empty BIMARU expansion and contraction.....

Janata Party’s transformation into Bharatiya Janata Party has an interesting history. It coincided with other changes that happened in parallel. VP Singh fell apart with CONmen, Jayaprakash Narayan movement created new political leaders, corruption in CONparty was increasing, Indira Gandui’s  anti-democratic behavior became a problem, the failure of Socialistic economy led to questioning the status quo, etc.

For a long time, BJP struggled to have friends. Other political parties viewed it as an untouchable. Then, for political exigency, they joined with others with very different political ideologies. George Fernandez is a good example. I am sure, he never was comfortable with BJP fellows and their thinking.

Anti-CON sentiment became a platform for creating regional parties. Shiva Sena, Akali Dal, Biju Janata Dal, Telugu Desam Party, DKheads, etc., came into existence. Among these, Shiva Sena is not a secularly minded party and its alliance with BJP is understandable. The others were basically dealing with BJP to fulfill their own needs. For example, When BJP came into power under Vjapayee, TDP joined the alliance mainly because BJP didn’t have a majority on its own and would depend on TDP to survive. Chandra Babu Naidu saw an opportunity to bring funds to his state using Vajpayee’s political weakness to his advantage.

It was Advani, not Vajpayee, who crystalized BJP’s Hindutva approach to politics. He used the anti-CON sentiment in the country to his advantage, pulled Ram into the political battle and made every region become mentally BIMARU to vote for his party.  Meanwhile, CONmen were shooting themselves on the foot. Also, others like Laloo, Mulayam & Mayawati, who prospered because of the anti-CON sentiment in the country, were becoming corrupt and losing their hold on BIMARU bhaiyyas. So, BJP became a prominent political party in N India. People saw its leaders as clean who deliver on their promises.

The natural personality of BJP – of being an untouchable – never really disappeared. So, it doesn’t still know how to live in harmony with coalition partners. Currently, almost all its allies are unhappy and are openly making anti-BJP statements. So, it looks like BJP’s isolationistic behavior is out in the open. Meanwhile, the party is smelling a lot of success in elections across the nation. Now it controls most of the states and Shah’s agenda is to see it succeed in Karnataka, W Bengal, Kerala, etc. AP, Telangana and TN are the only exceptions to this march of Shah.

Secularism has gradually disappeared in India mainly because of the extremely sickular behavior of political parties.  So, for a while, BJP/RSS will thrive in the country (as long as the economy does well). However, regional parties will stop cooperating with BJP and the average voter is already wondering if “acche din” is just a slogan like “garibi hatao”. With the US looking inwardly, the word trade going through changes and China becoming more prominent, we don’t know how India’s economy will adjust. Already there are indications that the country is unable to harness the “youth dividend” to its advantage. Industrial production is not increasing, job creation has been slow and no one is cooperating with the “make in India” agenda.

So, will BJP become another CON-ish political party or the real Hindutva baby of Advani? It is hard to say. It is certainly becoming more and more isolationistic. Will “thinking persons” vote for it or is it shrinking back to its BIMARU fan base? Will BJP become the cause for South India’s separation? We just have to wait and see……

Following the long ago example of Pres. Kennedy addressing his countrymen (Americans), P.M. Modi should go on TV and address his countrymen (Indians),

"My fellow Indians: Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country."

When will Himachal Pradesh give up on special category status? It has been enjoying the 90 (central funds) 10 (state funds) formula for a long time and hasn't developed much.

If tomorrow the central Govt. abolishes special status to states, you can be sure about Himachalis protesting the least in losing it.
