Just a matter of faith in different forms, IMO.
People are seen offering prayers / worships to animals, trees and other things.
Many a time there are instances of some guy or a woman, wearing a white or saffron color dress (having also a beard in the guy's case), showing up in a place, and people there lining up for miles spending hours to get his / her "darshna" and blessings while singing "bhajans" and offering prayers / obeisances to him / her.
There is also the ritual sometimes involving a man or a woman, prior to his / her real wedding to another human, marrying a tree or an animal to avoid ill fortune according to his / her horoscope.
