5000 MW to Pakistan while TN has blackouts
The Indian prime minister's lunch invitation to the visiting President is in conformity with the norms of courtesy and protocol. The luncheon meeting comes at a time when India has offered 5,000 MW of electricity to Pakistan, which is facing an unprecedented power shortage, and it has the potential of jumpstarting bilateral trade.
Power shortage had touched 50 per cent of the electricity demand in Pakistan, triggering widespread riots across Punjab, and Indian power could cool things down and generate tremendous good will.

UP does not produce ANYTHING. There is no need for ANY power in UP.
It is the Baluchistan of India.

Wrong. UP is the second largest producer of sugar cane (and sugar) in India.(Maharashtra is the other great sugar producing state.)
Adversities and low output in other parts of the country notwithstanding, the sugar output has gone up in Uttar Pradesh and the state remains India's second highest producer of the sweetener after Maharashtra.

Unfortunately electricity (AC) cannot be transmitted far. So if there is plenty of power produced in India close to the border with Pakistan, it makes good commercial sense to sell it them if there is no need for it in India within a transportable distance. Of course, we can only hope they price it right with apprpriate markup, instead of making it another CBM (confidence building measure). Since electric power is highly capital-intensive. India should play the game right (Pakistan cannot put power plants up in a hurry; India should know it by it's own experience).

Potentially there is a strategic angle to this. Pakistan's total capacity is around 20,000 MW. So this 5,000 MW would become a fifth of total supply. Having Pakistan rely heavily on Indian electricity supply gives India strategic leverage. Electricity is something that can't be stored (not in those quantities anyway), and it can be cut off at short notice, so getting them to depend on India for the supply is a good idea. Indian strategic planners should be thinking about pricing this in order to discourage investments in Pakistan to create domestic capacity.MulaiAzhagi wrote:The Indian prime minister's lunch invitation to the visiting President is in conformity with the norms of courtesy and protocol. high voltage electricity can be tranmitted for long distances with some loss. if you can bring power from arizona to california, why cant you do from hindia to TN also

why are you begging for power, KV? why don't you generate your own power in TN? that will be a baby step towards independence. how do you imagine independent TN begging manmohan singh for megawatts? will you be able to live with that?

Arizona and California are right next to each other, so it's possible. But Punjab/Kashmir where the excess power is produced (that is in the process of being sold to Pakistan) cannot be transmitted to Tamilnadu which is far away). This is true even with a robust transmission system between the two areas, which doesn't exist anyway.

Electricity from Neyveli is given to Karnataka in spite of TN protestr.
More than half of nuclear power also goes to other states in spite of TN objection.
