Tourist question --Help!
Hello,
I am new to this forum. I signed in looking to get some answers. My sister is visiting me here in the US from India. What is the best way for her husband to rent a car. They plan to do long distance travelling. They are US Citizens but moved back to India long ago. Is there anyway they can get auto Insurance for a month? Also how do I go about getting them an inexpensive phone for their use while they are here.
Thanks

Re: Tourist question --Help!
you dont need external auto insurance. just buy insurance from the rental agency itself. do they even have a US drivers license anymore or is it international DL?
get a prepaid phone from virgin mobile or boost or whatever:

Thanks for your reply. They have International DL. They were also asking me to enquire for a Sim card. Can I get one in one of the Desi Stores?

Re: Tourist question --Help!
maybe they have a phone from india they're hoping to use it with a new SIM card from US? that device might not work over here so your best bet is prepaid service from virgin mobile or one of the others.
you dont need a SIM card with prepaid service providers. pickup the phone, get the prepaid package (50 bucks per month usually) and you can start using the phone.

Thanks again. I guess they were thinking of using their phone from India.

Ask them to bring an unlocked quad-band phone from India. Otherwise it won't work here. If they do bring an unlocked quad-band phone, you can get a SIM from either AT&T or T-Mobile prepaid, and both will work. There are some other regional companies that offer prepaid service that will work on those quad-band phones; anything on this page which says AT&T or T-Mobile in the "Wireless Network" column will also work. Check out what's available wherever you live. I usually get a prepaid SIM from AT&T when I have family over from India.Desigirl wrote:Thanks for your reply. They have International DL. Thanks panini press. Which would be more economical? An AT&T/TMobile SIM card or prepaid virgin/boost cell phone?

No idea. It also depends on the usage pattern. Some pre-paid plans are designed for low use (they have a daily charge of $1 or something every day you use the phone) while others are designed for regular use (no daily charge, but need to recharge for a larger amount every month, and you use the amount or lose it). It is also a question of whether your relatives already have a quad-band phone they use in India or will need to buy one there or here, and how many months they need the phone for. Check out the link propagandhi posted; GoPhone there is AT&T.Desigirl wrote:Thanks panini press. Which would be more economical? An AT&T/TMobile SIM card or prepaid virgin/boost cell phone?

Another option may be to add a line to your current cell phone plan. That may be cheaper than the pre-paid option if they are going to be here for a while.
