Ah, you have fallen prey to the false propaganda of Hindians. Most of the victims of that "Hindi is rashtra bhasha" false propaganda are native Hindi speakers. But the occasional southern Indian does fall prey to it.

hindi is not the national language as per the indian constitution. this is true. on the other hand, hindi is the national language in the sense that it is spoken by the largest number of people all across India. It is not largely confined to a single state like the Indian regional languages (Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, etc.).

more a considered strong hunch. the linguistic viewpoint (claiming to know tamil well, dissing the kazhagamists, dismissing those who can't in his estimation make the "zha" sound, and making the case for hindi as the national language), the writing style and the handle name itself. pushpagiri used to have an earlier handle by the name chandaprasandan poonkunnam, the last name being a reference to his village and also a literal translation of the sanskritic pushpagiri. poonkunnam is poo + kunnam (kundram in tamil, literally a flower mountain). this flower business is a recurring theme with him. further to that the breasted one had invited him here and the timing of the appearance of this handle i think was not coincidental. i am happy to be proven wrong, but i think it's him.

Having made signal contribution to the freedom struggle, Tamil Nadu must be in the vanguard in promoting teaching of our national language Hindi, Justice V.S. Malimath, Chancellor & President Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Chennai, said here on Sunday.

The national poet Subramania Bharathi in his article Young India published in 1905 had emphasised the need and importance of our people learning Hindi, Justice Malimath said, while delivering the convocation address at the 13th Visharad Convocation of Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Tamil Nadu.

"We must remember that Hindi has a place of pride in the languages spoken in the world, the language spoken by the third largest number of people in the world next only to Chinese and English. Hindi is spoken by the largest number of people in India." Justice Malimath said.

Founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1918, the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha has a unique and distinguished heritage and enjoys a pride of place in the nation. People of South India are fortunate that they are blessed with such a great institution to foster teaching of Hindi to our people. "We must take full advantage of the same and become active participants in the nation building activity", Justice Malimath pointed out.

It was after an enormous struggle and great sacrifices that we were able to break the shackles of slavery and become a free and independent nation. People from all parts of India joined the freedom struggle irrespective of their religion, caste, creed or language.

"People of India must live together as members of one family if we have to preserve Independence and maintain unity and integrity of our nation. It is for this reason that the founding fathers of our constitution chose Hindi our national language", Justice Malimath said. He congratulated the students for attaining proficiency in Hindi.

Visharad degree certificates were distributed to over 3,000 students on the occasion. Rank holders of the exam and four senior Pracharaks were honoured on the occasion.

The president, Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Tamil Nadu A.P.C.V. Chokkalingam presided over the convocation. R.F. Nirlakatti, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Post Graduate and Research Institute, Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Chennai, First Vice President of Tamil Nadu Sabha S. Arunachalam, M.S. Muralidharan, Second Vice President of the Sabha, Chennai, General Secretary C.N.V. Annamalai and Second Vice President of the Tamil Nadu Sabha S. Ravindran and others participated in the programme.

CHENNAI: Efforts need to be taken to strengthen Hindi as a common language across India, even as many languages continue to flourish unhindered, said Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah said. Speaking at the World Hindi Day celebrations at a function at the Raj Bhavan, Rosaiah said the bond of national unity could be strengthened only through a common language.

“When we see the history of the evolution of Indian languages, all letters belong to two families. One is the Aryan family and the other is the Dravidian family. Each and every language plays its own role in the composite culture of our country and there should be no competition between languages,” said the Governor. “Along with the growth of regional language, we need a common language for facilitating free and easy inter communication,” he added.

“The spirit of human feeling is one and it is the same in any language it is expressed. We need to strengthen this bond of unity. The unity of India lies in the art, music, drama and in languages of our country,” Rosaiah said.

The sixth World Hindi Day celebrations were organised by the Tamil Nadu Hindi Academy in association with the Dharmamurthi Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty Hindu College. Even as the programme was conducted entirely in Hindi, it stuck to protocol and began with the Tamil Thaai Vazhthu, with many of the Hindi scholars present singing the official State song.

Rosaiah, who is known to be fluent in a number of languages, chose to address the gathering in English, instead of Hindi.

“More and more people are learning Hindi in the South. This is especially true in Tamil Nadu. Hindi is growing. It is now taught in 165 universities around the world,” noted Balashowri Reddy, president of the Tamil Nadu Hindi Academy.

A Kanagaraj, chairman of the Jaya Group of Institutions, called on Hindi institutions and scholars to abandon their strong urban bias and look towards rural India. The depth of language and its understanding in rural India must not be underestimated, he said, offering his institution’s support for any rural programmes for language development.

DRBCCC Hindu College principal S Kalpana Bai, TNHA senior patron MK Mohan and TNHA working president RM Srinivasan were among those who took part in the function, in which a number of scholars of Hindi as well as those of other languages were felicitated by the Governor.

My understanding is that most Telangans are lovers of hindi, or at any rate do not have any chip on their shoulders with respect to hindi. of course, a few exceptions will always be around.

This is a good example of the typical flawed logic which you have started to use on a more or less regular basis. Consider this: it is possible to say 'No religion' if someone asks what is your religion. but it is not possible for a civilized human being (i.e. not a barbarian) to say 'No language' if one asks what language(s) that person speaks.
One needs a common link language in any country for two countrymen to communicate with each other. hindi is a national language in this sense: it is the most commonly used link language all across India.
