You missed having some fun. You should have said:

Gujarati brought up in South India (meaning Madras)

or

a Madrasi brought up in Gujarat.

LOL! Maybe your hindi is not good enough. Razz

The thing is, most gujaratis consider everyone else to be a gujarati too. Many times I've had gujaratis come up to me (even in desi grocery stores, not garbas and in the swami narayan temple) and talk to me in gujarati until i interrupt them with 'excuse me, I don't know gujarati'.

Many of the gas stations in California, a lot of them in the sacto- san joaquin corridor are owned by Punjabis, many who have been here a couple of generations. If they see you are indian, they ask if you speak punjabi.

After seeing a Puerto rican and a Korean speak fluent hindi, and not to mention a couple of blacks speaking Tamil anything is possible.
