Ashdoc's movie review---Gangs of Wasseypur
When a British director ( I forgot his name ) was shown the Raj Kapoor movie AAN , at the end of it when he was asked his opinion about it he answered ,'' It just goes AWN and AWN and AWN.....''
He could have well been talking about this film.....
For it certainly goes on and on and on.....
This is certainly the longest movie I have seen in some time .
And if the director wanted to show the futility of attempting revenge in a bloodsoaked dog-eat-dog land where everyone is pointlessly killing each other then he has been certainly effective in that----for the leading actor's ( such a violent character can hardly be called '' hero '' ) attempt to take revenge for a past crime is so tedious and long lasting that you will surely get convinced about its futility towards the end......especially because the whole attempt is unsuccessful in the end .
And in showing this attempted revenge the director has been successful in giving epic treatment to the movie---for the movie spans three generations.....all generations indulging in bloodlust , for such is the character of the badlands that are the coal mines of Bihar.....
The movie begins during British rule and ends in the late twentieth century.....but does it really end ??? for the director says in the end that the story is incomplete---obviously the cycle of revenge and counter-revenge and violence is going the continue , far beyond the span of the movie.....indeed it is a saga without end---the saga of Bihar/ Jharkhand......
The movie is violent , but not as violent as publicised---for in between the bouts of violence the male characters find time for romance with goodlooking women....indeed the leading character finds time to marry two women , the second one being sexier than the first....
Indeed , you cannot show violence all the time in such a lengthy movie.....and in fact all the permutations and combinations in such a long movie cannot be retold here---I am not going to agonise myself by trying to tell the complicated story here.....
What holds the film together is the bravura preformance of Manoj Bajpai---indeed its a role tailormade for his type of acting.....one cannot imagine the film without him.....
There are some killer dialogues which will win seetis and taalis , and overall the atmosphere in Bihar is well picturised in the film---but whether these things will be sufficient to take it far at the box office is something that only time will tell.....
My opinion---just about okay.....

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---Gangs of Wasseypur
i agree. i think my verdict would verge on "not worth watching" but i won't do that for the reasons i spell now: a) good documentary of the coal mafia from raj times and how it morphed into steel theft and then rangdari -- very realistic and factual; b) stellar acting by my favourite performers, nawaziddin siddiqui, manoj bajpai and the lovely piyush mishra; c) great soundtrack; d) authentic bihari and bihari-muslim flavour with dollops of bengali touches. major drawback is too much (unnecessary) blood and gore.ashdoc wrote:My opinion---just about okay.....

I hated the background score. Film I thought was pretty decent.

i'm quite surprised you found it decent (note to self -- ss likes bad movies). but you got to love the song i posted in the "what are you listening to" thread from the movie. perhaps it was the ONLY decent song.Silk Smitha wrote:I hated the background score. Film I thought was pretty decent.

the connections of this film to bollywood (amitabh bacchan) are very eerie for they are true!

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---Gangs of Wasseypur
ha ha, this movie is worth watching thrice to actually follow the story and dialogues. the story on screen is severely truncated and cannot be followed unless observed in detail. i am revising my estimate. the best actor award ought to go to tigmanshu dulia (for playing ramadhir singh) and the best actress award to richa chadha (for playing the role of nagma khatoon).

after a lot of introspection i have decided to let faizal khan join the kaam from today on a part-time basis. his first task was to visit the temple and then visit the slaughter houses of the qureshis (upon permission from them) today. mera game to kabhi bhi baj sakta hai. better to be safe than sorry.

no. those who live lives of revenge, vendetta, constant fighting, sabotaging the adversary and constantly shifting alignments (my father was a part of the enemy for a brief period for example), spread across generations, will find shades of their own lives in the story-plot of this 2 part movie. those who haven't seen the movie (i am assuming you haven't) will not be able to understand my post above (which is autobiographical). there are some memorable lines in the movie like, mere jindagi ka ek hi maksad hai! badla. marunga nai, uski “keh ke loonga." that line resonates with me. also the line used in promos, "crime is inherited." the bad blood environment i live in is inherited.

the comparison of this movie with our lives is eerie. i know they are waiting for me to die. it is their *only* prospect. but the story will not end with me.

lol. my (rather "our") life story actually. my warring with (some of) my cousins; their many attempts to annihilate my business (raids for example) and the war entering the third generation ( i've decided to acclimatize my older to the terrain as a back-up option).

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---Gangs of Wasseypur
one more dialogue from the movie that i can recreate only in hindi (i'll search for the original tomorrow). it goes like this (in my hindi translation or remembrance for the original might have been in hindi too):
uske mooh me sutli (thread) daal ke gand se nikal ke patang nahi udayii mainey to mera naam ramadhir singh nahin.
if i don't put a thread in his mouth, take it out from his anus and fly a kite with that thread then my name is not ramadhir singh. what it implies that the man will fly fly in the sky with the kite.
edit. “Mooh se taar ghusake gaand se nikalke patang nahin udaayi toh humara naam nahin!” http://in.movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-reviews/gangs-wasseypur-review-160906526.html

when we (me and my family) had gone over to my cousins' place for dinner last weekend, there was a moment of irony. we discussed this movie at length. we were both enthralled by it and were eagerly awaiting the release of the sequel. we had spent our formative years of business in the durgapur-asansol-dhanbad-bokaro belt; although they are older than me by about a decade.

Ugh. Vee Unkil has a very valid point that North Indians have some obsession with gaand and violating it in some fashion.

LOL. the "let's-make-peace" stage has long passed. if anything, my life's story has taught me a lot about human psychology. my (warring) cousins are 50+. a man gets used to a lifestyle after a critical point and he is content with it. this is true for my cousins. they do not care for their progeny; they care only for themselves and the lifestyle that they are used to. they don't want to suffer humiliation, at this late stage, by making peace. "making peace" for them is giving up something they have fought for all their lives. if they have failed, let them die with that thought. foregoing assets in their lifetime by "making peace" is a humiliation they don't want to deal with. on the flip side, were i to suddenly die, they would win what they have been fighting for all their lives (they would get unfettered possession and a cantakerous, litigating, fighting nuisance (me) removed). that too is a seductive prospect. my mother died of a stroke when she was 47. i am that age. and they know i am my mother's son.

Lmao, right after I made the above post last night I had to flee from my house in a lungi with my older. Cops arrested 2 of my guys. I checked into a hotel and am still in the hotel. My boys got released late at night after intervention by a local politician. Life is strange. Older enjoyed the events. I will survive!

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---Gangs of Wasseypur
Let me add more drama. I cannot resist posting. Plus I am bored in this hotel. I am waiting for my man to take anticipatory bail.
The day my father died, one of my projects was to be inaugurated. My man called me from out of town enquiring if he should postpone the inaugaration.I told him to go ahead with the inauguration. I have narrated the story to my older and told him not to stop any business and perform only the bare minimum Hindu rituals upon my death. I am evidently obsesseed with my death right now.

It's so hard to run a business in india. ex tells me how he had to go bail his manager out in the jail, after getting an anticipatory bail for himself. Says was a traumatic period for him. He had soon wound up that business, and left that state. You seem much more seasoned, I believe.

No charges against my older but I was giving him business lessons right then so I said let's run -- It's time for practicals, i.e. hands-on experience. We laughed heartily in the hotel -- it's tough in India but sometimes it's fun. I've cooled my heels thrice in the lockup so I am not easily intimidated.
Did not get ant. Bail today (FIR no. Procurred only an hour ago). It's ok for I am going out of town tomorrow with older for more practical lessons.

Fictitious charges against me. Theft of rs. 90,000 and a gold chain. I don't know how they dragged non-bailable sections into it. ijjat ki vaat laga di. Sala 90 lacs likhna tha na. Now I am a pickpocket.

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---Gangs of Wasseypur
A business rival. I had let his brother-in-law stay in a paying-guest accommodation I own and operate in my neighbourhood when we were friends. The guy was staying in a posh locality for a pittance (a favour I extended) for years. I evicted him forcefully when the rival (erstwhile friend) backstabbed me in business a few days ago - perfectly legit. thing I did for you don't get any rights after staying for years in a hotel room. Eviction is a civil proceeding - police apply apply no reply. So he fabricated a criminal angle - theft during eviction.

lol, just saw your embedded link and googled barzini. he is a haryanvi chura chamaar; a lowlife, class-less, cheap marwari. i thwarted his backstab and the collective humiliation of that plus the booting of his brother in law resulted in his resorting to such a dirty trick. in retrospect it is good i kicked his b.i.l. out -- he would have made my life miserable had i ever politely requested him to leave. i think i will close my PG accomodation -- not worth the nuisance.Hellsangel wrote:Huzefa Kapasi wrote:A business rival.

the game is not over yet. cops have slapped nasty sections on me and anticipatory bail from high court will take a few days, maybe a week. agarwal ki ma ki ankh. cops want a mandoli, bole to settlement. cops think they are the biggest goondas (which they are to be honest). bahut paisa khaya hoga sala. dekha jayega, let us see.

ha ha, my older half-seriously said yesterday that he wishes to join the army after college. i know it is 'cos of his infatuation with the majors and lt. colonels he plays polo with. but i suspect it is also 'cos he can then slap cops in public with impunity.
i have more to say on this whole incident but i'll say only after i get anticipatory bail. right now i do not wish to comment because the matter is sub judice (man i had wanted to say that in public ALL my life).

Re: Ashdoc's movie review---Gangs of Wasseypur
More than a 100 years ago, somewhere in UP where my nana's family lived, some distant relative became a runaway and joined the dacoits. He then became their khabri, and would orchestrate robberies in his own relatives' houses. In the middle of some such night, my nana's mom got fed up of this nonsense, declared she won't live in this fear even one more day, and overnight they packed and left UP and migrated to a nearby state. There, they joined the already migrated UP'ites from their area, and my nana got a job in the railways. All their lives they lived in their own UP ghetto world; socialized among themselves; dressed in their own style; followed their own customs and rituals; cooked their own style of food (mom doesn't have much idea about the state she lived 26 years of her life); married their sons to girls from UP and have them over. But no one ever went back there, except to visit relatives for marriages, etc. After 2-3 generations, even this link is gone now.
I have heard similar migration stories from atleast 4-5 other friends, hindu or muslim.
Point is, you either stay back and keep fighting, or you leave it behind and live peacefully. Different choices for different people.

interesting story nats!
my grandfather left agra (after moving there from bharatpur -- he was a civil engineer posted in agra; a failed one at that) for kolkata to strike out on his own and escape the economic impoverishment of agra. he was joined here by his wife and kids. he died within 2 years of struggling here (he was treated by dr. b. c. roy! and my oldest uncle would struggle hard to repay the debts of my grand father's treatment!) and my father's oldest brother became the patriarch of the family. he, along with his brothers, struck gold. now when i visit agra, i see it inching closer and closer to delhi every visit. aligarh and mathura are almost a suburbs of delhi. even the culture has changed to a delhi one. land prices have sky rocketed. kolkata has fallen from grace since then.

yes they can. police are the biggest goondas. they have slapped 120B (cheating) and two more sections (dispossession and robbery). these are minor sections and i will get bail but it will take time because i am dealing with the high court.panini press wrote:

from experience, i got anticipatory bail for my father in 2000 from mumbai high court. his crime was impersonating and stealing 40 kgs of gold from RBI (i will tell that story later). he was apprehending arrest by CBI. the sections ran into pages. if he could get bail, why not me.
p.s. you should see GOW (movie). i am watching part 2 in the theatre tomorrow.

LMAOOOOOO! that thought *did* cross my mind. notice i haven't mentioned where i am watching it: mumbai, delhi, patna, bengaluru.
i *am* a bit scared of using my phone but i don't want to drive myself into a state of frenzy. i have shut my internet on phone -- they can track me only by 8 km radius mobile tower NOT tower and IP. but i am mentally prepared for judicial custody (JC) if the need arises. here's a typical day in JC:
as soon as you enter, you get jail clothes to wear. you get your own lota/mug too i think. water is rationed. twice a day there will be a roll call. you will have to line up in single file, squat on floor and raise your hand when your no. is called. if your opponent is a badass, he can hire criminals to bash you up -- pimps galore outside the jail to have this done for you. i won't get booze -- no problem. they can't stop my meds. even if they do, i will get permission from the magistrate in 24 hours. in any case i can go 2 days without meds. (long half life): been there, done that.
my father was in JC in arthur road jail, mumbai, for 2 days. i lined up the jail doctor and my father spent the 2 days in the jail hospital inside the jail. no roll call, good sanitation and i could chat with him every hour over the doc.'s mobile. dekha jayega!!

as soon as you enter, you get jail clothes to wear. you get your own lota/mug too i think. water is rationed. twice a day there will be a roll call. you will have to line up in single file, squat on floor and raise your hand when your no. is called. if your opponent is a badass, he can hire criminals to bash you up -- pimps galore outside the jail to have this done for you. i won't get booze -- no problem. they can't stop my meds. even if they do, i will get permission from the magistrate in 24 hours. in any case i can go 2 days without meds. (long half life): been there, done that.

I didn't realize they can create so much trouble with an allegation of stealing Rs. 90,000.
from experience, i got anticipatory bail for my father in 2000 from mumbai high court. his crime was impersonating and stealing 40 kgs of gold from RBI (i will tell that story later). he was apprehending arrest by CBI. the sections ran into pages. if he could get bail, why not me.
p.s. you should see GOW (movie). i am watching part 2 in the theatre tomorrow.
Is there a gangster moll in all this? There should be...get a sardonic, chain smoking, wise cracking, rebellious ex Aunty as your moll while on lam - blubber work should fit the bill. Also regarding the movie watching, don't go down without a gunfight when g-men ambush ya outside the movie theater ala Dillinger...also don't forget to dress nattily and wear a pencil moustache...it's a must for an outlaw.
