Gandhi's effect on the British Empty Gandhi's effect on the British

Post by MulaiAzhagi Sat Aug 04, 2012 10:28 pm

It is now being revealed that MK Gandhi had much less effect on the grant of independence by the British than Neta Ji Subhash chander Bose and Indian Armed Forces. It was tacitly recognised by then British Prime Minister, Mr.Clement Atlee. N S Rajaram in his article " Netaji's Ghost-The Freedom Struggle" quotes famous historian RC Mazumdar from his three-volume "History of freedom Movement in India", to say that Clement Atlee had told BP Chakravarti, Governor of West Bengal in 1947, that MK Gandhi's impact on Atlee's decision to grant independence to India was "minimal".Here is an excerpt from this article included in the blog of Atanu Dey :-

"-------When B.P. Chakravarti was acting as Governor of West Bengal, Lord Attlee visited India and stayed as his guest for three days at the Raj Bhavan. Chakravarti asked Attlee about the real grounds for granting Independence to India. Specifically, his question was, when the Quit India movement lay in ruins years before 1947, what was the need for the British to leave in such a hurry. Attlee’s response is most illuminating and important for history. Here is the Governor’s account of what Attlee told him:

'In reply Attlee cited several reasons, the most important were the activities of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose which weakened the very foundation of the attachment of the Indian land and naval forces to the British Government. Towards the end, I asked Lord Attlee about the extent to which the British decision to quit India was influenced by Gandhi’s activities. On hearing this question Attlee’s lips widened in a smile of disdain and he uttered, slowly, putting emphasis on each single letter mi-ni-mal---'

I am saying this for years. Do you people listen. Nonviolence does not work, only possible exception may be American civil rights movement because Americans are good people

Sara
the facts before 1947 decision were well.
Atlee could be minimizing gandhi role for political purposes as the widely held belief was non voilence defeated mighty empire. That enduring belief was later used by tanzania nyrere south africas nelson mandela and usas martin luther king.
There were many armed rebellions in pre 1947 India. They all contributed to the cause. Basic movement of the people was gandhian non voilent protest. That historic movement moved masses like never before in history. Since it was not a armed struggle the end was not abrupt.
Chakravarti was trying to take a small piece truth and paint his own history.

The Bose-Gandhi rivalry in Congress created bitter feelings in Bengal. So it is not surprising that Bengal Congress members tried to understate Gandhi's role in independence. And Rajaram has his own political motives for understating Gandhi's role.
