It's time to act blind, deaf and dumb. Let us not talk all the time about this bicoastal liberal obsession. Nothing to see / say / do here!
I am going to now look for any non-gun homicides and post them as support for not talking about guns. Non-gun homicides are much more interesting and newsworthy than mass shootings, which are now routine weekly occurrences in America.

Max, what about poor people in rural areas of the U.S. who need a gun to hunt for food and fill their stomachs?

we've already had this discussion. don't like repeating myself. hunters rich or poor don't need the kind of weapons being used in these mass shootings.

you claimed in the earlier discussion that the poor feed themselves at Macdonalds and not through hunting. I would submit that your argument does not hold true for poor in rural areas. I think what you want is not a blanket gun ban but a ban on automatic weapons. Is that right?

first, the macdonalds in rural america are few in number. second, many people in rural america (including the poor) have a proud tradition of hunting. The point is that you cannot take away a gun from someone who is using it to fill his stomach.
the answer to your first question is yes.

it is not. if you specified that you are against the common man in america having access to automatic weapons then you would find support even amongst conservatives rather than your current position where you seem to wish to deny the right for people to have any guns at all.

your clarification should not be buried somewhere between a thread since it is a crucial clarification. whenever you argue against guns, make sure you insert that clarification in each and every post of yours. i struck out your words where in my opinion you were wrong.

Whatt...Rural Americans hunt to put food on their table? Did not realize that America is so broke...
Rasmunullah: Houston and NYC are not rural. Or did you meet someone from Minneapolis sitting next to you on the plane? Looks like you know all about Rural Amrikkaa.

this shows with even more clarity that you don't know jack about american conservatives. their interpretation of the second amendment is absolute. they will not strike ANY compromises. my clarification is irrelevant. if you go and read the comments section of articles in places like CNN in the immediate aftermath of these tragedies you'll get frightened silly.

The Federal assault weapons ban had nothing to do with taking away weapons that are primarily used for hunting. Still, the NRA aggressively lobbied Congress until the ban got killed. May Akbar save us from hasty conclusions.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:Rashmun wrote:

NRA will oppose any and all gun laws. It believes - more than the second amendment - that any compromise on this issue will slowly eat into their gun ownership of all kinds over time. The second amendment is just an excuse as everyone knows that tup-tup guns are no match for the military arsenal.

what you say is true for a section of the conservatives, not for all conservatives. my point is that a significant section of conservatives can be won over to your point of view if you choose to have a rational discussion with them without resorting to lampooning or ridiculing all conservatives.

That is only right. One has to be very suspicious of any governmental move to limit constitutional rights. In my view, there should be only minimal constraints on the right to bear arms. The conservatives are doing a fine job safeguarding the citizenry's rights - which bicoastal liberal camp-followers of that socialist Obummer would give away in a trice, given half a chance.

find me a republican who is willing to strike ANY kind of compromise on the second amendment, and i'll find you intelligent life on mars. rashmun, i'm sorry but you seem completely out of touch with current US politics. you have either never lived here, or lived here in a different era. absolute unwillingness to compromise on any and all political issues with democrats is the definition of a republican these days.

i have colleagues at work who are self proclaimed republicans, and when i discussed this issue with them they agreed that there is no need for the common man to have access to automatic weapons. So i speak from personal experience and not from reading up random internet posts on the cnn website.

i'll believe what you say, but that doesn't change the fact that the political atmosphere in the US is as vitiated as i've seen it in the two decades i've lived here. your colleagues are an increasingly diminishing species. ask them if they'd support reinstating the assault weapons ban.

On Monday, Bachmann had lunch with his chief deputy, who had to deliver the eviction notice at the nearby residence afterward. Bachmann took the notice and volunteered to serve it himself, Hamlin said.
that's some hard luck.
