what do you think of this equivalent of the pythagoras theorem that calculates hypotenuses without the use of squares and their roots? is there a formal proof for it? https://such.forumotion.com/t7871-pythagorus-theorem-and-pothayanar-theorem-tamil-content-someone-translate-it#59431

i am very curious. apparently it finds mention in a tamil poem dated to 2000 BC.

ok, the above formula has a proviso. the larger of the two sides must always be taken as the base (a). further if the hypotenuse and one side is given, you need a "trick" to guess if the remaining side is the shorter side or the longer side.
