Ganpatram in the Economist Empty Ganpatram in the Economist

Banyan, the Asia columnist at Economist, has a profile of domestic servants in India. The gentleman featured here reminds me of another Mr. Mandal who works in the house of a family I know back home. When he he developed throat cancer, his employers paid for his healthcare.

It used to be that everyone was out of the house by 8am to go to the office. But now because of the internet they can work from home
so true! on some days i don't even go to office, which is a few flights down, and operate from home over net and phone. sometimes i go to office only for meetings and then return home. i do not see anything unusual in this though older relatives are unable to comprehend and think i am probably jobless.

but yes, good helps like mandal are increasingly difficult to find these days. but not in kolkata yet. i ritually send helps and staff from here (from bengal, bihar and orissa) to my cousin in mumbai for his office and house needs. maybe there is a body shopping biz. opportunity here.
