How do airlines calculate baggage ?

Let us say you are going from Cleveland-Chicago-Delhi-Hyderabad. The baggage allowed on international leg is 1+1 (cabin+check in). What about the Cleveland-Chicago leg? Does one have to pay for the added bag in this leg? Only thing surely the airlines tell is that, the bags are booked through Delhi, after taking them in at Cleveland.
If the same route is followed on the way back to USA, does the Chicago - Cleveland route again charge for bags? How does this work? TIA

If you have the entire journey Cleveland to Hyderabad in the same ticket, then the international baggage rule will (usually) be followed.
If your Cleveland - Chicago is on a separate ticket then that segment is domestic.

You mean the same "reservation?" In these days of hotwire, orbitz and priceline, what is a ticket? It is all some electronic code and/or last name.

Even in 2012, there are ticket numbers. If all your segments are on the same eticket, then international baggage rules apply. If you bought the Cleveland-Chicago leg separately, that will be treated as domestic and you pay for bags.

You will have to pay for extra baggage from Clevland to Chicago, but from Chicago to India it will be free.

Irrespective of how you buy it, ONE reservation number should have all the flights from Cleveland to Hyd and ONE payment.
