surplus males and bare branches
a timely book on what happens to a society that has too many men.
amazon's description of the book:
What happens to a society that has too many men? In this provocative book, Valerie Hudson and Andrea den Boer argue that, historically, high male-to-female ratios often trigger domestic and international violence. Most violent crime is committed by young unmarried males who lack stable social bonds. Although there is not always a direct cause-and-effect relationship, these surplus men often play a crucial role in making violence prevalent within society. Governments sometimes respond to this problem by enlisting young surplus males in military campaigns and high-risk public works projects. Countries with high male-to-female ratios also tend to develop authoritarian political systems. Hudson and den Boer suggest that the sex ratios of many Asian countries, particularly China and India -- which represent almost 40 percent of the world's population -- are being skewed in favor of males on a scale that may be unprecedented in human history. Through offspring sex selection (often in the form of sex-selective abortion and female infanticide), these countries are acquiring a disproportionate number of low-status young adult males, called "bare branches" by the Chinese. Hudson and den Boer argue that this surplus male population in Asia's largest countries threatens domestic stability and international security. The prospects for peace and democracy are dimmed by the growth of bare branches in China and India, and, they maintain, the sex ratios of these countries will have global implications in the twenty-first century.

Re: surplus males and bare branches
These kind of studies and articles got started publishing in India about 15-20 years ago, when we first began taking notice of changing sex ratio in India. It's one thing to remember reading about it back then. It's another to see it actually happening. Those sociologists were pretty correct when they predicted all this.

Book from 2004 - Author is a feminist, associated with Bush and Texas --> Times kinda trashed it --> Correlation is not causation --> Author herself admits to sex ratios being "exacerbating factor" and nothing more --> file under category of "questionable science" and "pet peeves" --> No subsequent follow up to address critics with a groundbreaking study --> Ignore

Re: surplus males and bare branches
a long time ago when my first daughter was an infant we had an excellent opportunity to permanently move back to india. after much soul searching we decided against it. certainly we were NOT thinking about the issue of raising a daughter in india as a factor in our decision making. in retrospect, we made the right decision. in addition to all the factors that were at play back then, we would have to contend with the shameful recent events. many relatives, parents of young daughters, have expressed fear in recent days. i would not want my daughters to grow up with fear in their hearts to conduct their lives.
i realize that you could of course point to newtown.

*ahem* one can't help but wonder whether or not the persistent bitterness exhibited by some of the male handles on SuCh, that hail from (or have roots in) Prameela Raj(yam), has got anything to do with generations of high female-to-male ratio.

Ummm, I haven't heard any concerns from my near & dear in India, in regards to the safety of their daughters. Yes they're a bit more cautious, but they(we) always were even back in the '90s.

the men who were responsible in the bus rape case were certainly low status young adult males.
