Re: Violin Maestro MSG passes away
A friend of mine who grew up in Madras once recounted an experience with MSG. One year, after the music season was over, he and six of his friends attended a concert where MSG was playing. He played even better (than in the concerts during the music season) in that sparsely attended concert. When my friend asked him why he put so much into a relatively minor concert, MSG replied that playing violin was the same anywhere for him irrespective of the number of people in the audience; also every concert for him was just a practice session to get better for the next time.

That is a great attitude!
I wish all the doctors have the same attitude to their patients regardless of whether their patients can afford to pay for their services or not.

MSG's tonal purity was just phenomenal. i've heard mamas and mamis in chennai remark that this was due to his training and equal felicity in hindustani music where greater demands are placed on shruti shuddam.

Re: Violin Maestro MSG passes away
another thing i always appreciated about MSG is that even after he became a fixture as a soloist in the sabhas, and well after becoming sangItha kalAnidhi, he continued accompanying which he saw as an important aspect of his art. in fact he has accompanied very junior artistes right down to the sanjay, vijay siva generation. TNK and lalgudi stopped that a long time ago. he did that as a service to the junior vocalists who i am sure learned a lot from him.
