Class: New assignment to lighten things a bit
The objective is to write a story. It can be a short story or one that others may build on.
The cast of characters: an indian asst. prof, his substantially younger wife, an indian grad student and a white american. We know how Rishi's story unfolded. The idea here is to re-write the story of these four characters. Let your imaginations soar.
(Rishi, honestly no offense-- thought this would be an interesting thread to get the creative juices flowing)

I was just trying to remember MulaiAzaghi's character's name. I was thinking he will show up as that grad student.

Re: Class: New assignment to lighten things a bit
Manjay landed in the United States of America on September 11, 2011. He was thoroughly exhausted, and had a little trouble identifying his bags on the carousel at JFK. His journey began at Madurai Junction, where his considerable extended family extended him extensive and tearful farewells. He, all said, was the first among the clan to leave the shores of the holy motherland and make the perilous ocean crossing to America.
Manjay wasn't the smartest kid on the block; far from it, but he was what Madras Iyers from ward 6 might -- with a healthy mixture of condescension and suspicion -- call street-smart. He had always had big dreams, if not the wherewithal to attain them on first attempt. What he lacked in academic credentials, he more than made up with his enterprise and perseverance. He did not make it to IIT despite the best efforts of the brilliant folk at Brilliant Tutorials and Sundaram Tutorials. Yet, through sheer determination, hardwork and imagination, he secured admission to a graduate program at a university in a town of not insignificant size on the eastern seaboard of these United States. His extended family was keenly aware of Manjay's limitations, but they were all aware of his redeeming strengths as well. And they turned out in full force on platform 2 of the Madurai railway station to wish him luck on the adventure of his life.
As he heaved a big sigh of relief at clearing immigration at JFK, little did Manjay know about the true nature of his adventures in this land of plenty. That very morning, even as Manjay experienced feelings of apprehension, anxiety, anticipation and accomplishment when disembarking from his Air India flight, Sara awoke to yet another day of dreadful boredom and monotony. She woke up soon after dawn in that university town of not insignificant size, because the kids were up before her. As she lay in bed listening to her younger's screams, she was overcome with a feeling of weariness and a lack of purpose in life. Here she was, a stunningly good-looking woman, who had aced calculus before her first child was born. Her teenage dreams of becoming a renowned bharatanattiyam virtuoso were squelched, thanks to her husband's lack of imagination. That assistant professor of a husband was already up and at his sandhyavandanam, having gone to bed promptly at 9 pm the night before.
PS: Happy new year, everyone!

Haha. Brilliant. HNY Caru and welcome back.
One small detail. Having failed to get into IIT, Manjay graduated in Electrical Engineering from a tier-2 college called PSG College of Engineering in Coimbatore.

Might have made for a more interesting story if you would have written an autobiographical piece on how and why the Nizam persecuted your ancestors thereby resulting in your life long hatred for all the Nizams.

mrs.saraswati venkatachalam sighed, looked at herself in the bathroom mirror and practised a few mudras. how she wished she had been more assertive about her true ambitions in life and pursued the career in dance instead of getting married. to add to it, she got pregnant within the first year. her thoughts wandered towards jim, the white american guy whom she has been meeting every day at the play school that she took her son to. jim calls her 'sara'. she sighed again.
she was all of 19 when venky, her neighbour, visited from america where he had gone for his graduate studies. venky, with his middle-parted hair and round glasses, won her over when he shyly handed her a bar of hershey's white chocolate across the fence that separated their houses. since venky was back in india to find a bride, and sarasu was everything that he could dream of in a girl, he asked his parents to do the needful - gothram/horoscope etc matched and they were officially engaged within 2 weeks. saraswati couldn't get enough of venky's life in america as a grad student - especially the bit about how he saved money by reusing trash bags and stuffing his pockets with sugar and ketchup packets from mcd and other fast food joints. venky ploughed his way through his phD and got a tenure-track position at a university in a town of insignificant size in the midwest. he had also started buying his own sugar and ketchup.
thus began saraswati's american dream.

I have a serious document to finish. But loving this story. Will pitch in later maybe.
But when I read Sara I could not connect it to saraswati. That's where my storyline will be weak. Not much si info.
Btw. 31 year old man handing white chocolate to a 19 year old over the fence is border pedophilia. Would have loved her giving a marriage interview, singing with veena in her hand infront of the goofy venki, like they show in so many movies.

Atleast sounds like it. Specially if she was 18ish when chocolate swapping happened. Barely legal, college going kid. Maybe I'm more age-conscious than others.

>>>>Good build up on the story guys. Will check in later. In a rush, couple of client meetings today.
Carvaka, welcome back. Thought you had gone into hiding after taking on the mortgage. Happy New Year.
(Long as we are talking of Bharatnatyam, may I also throw in Higginbothams and Veshtis in the mix? One other angle, the girl's ambition is to be an Opera Singer, despite her forays into history, calc, nuclear physics and the part-time teaching gig at Cal Tech) . She is using the men in her life to eventually get there.
