How to stop getting notifications for good? Do I have to click on "Stop reading" under each topic I respond to? What if I permanently want no notifications?

Go to your Profile (link in the row right below the logo). Click on the Preferences tab. Change the setting for "Always notify me of replies" to No (it is probably Yes for you now). That will take care of it for future replies.

For your past replies, go to "Topics being watched" tab in the Profile. Select all topics, and click on the "Stop watching" button below the list of topics.

This should take care of it. Please let me know if there are any problems.
