Poetry in the House of the People
The Prime Minister, referring to the crude language used by the opposition to criticize the government, quotes Mirza Ghalib:
ham kO unsE vafA ki thI ummId
jo jAntE nahIn vafA kyA hai
"I had an expectation of loyalty from a person who doesn't know what loyalty means." This is from the ghazal dil-e-nAdAn. The Prime Minister meant to suggest that the opposition lacked an understanding of the meaning of civility, not loyalty.
The Leader of the Opposition, in response, quotes Bashir Badr:
kuch to majbUriyAn rahI hOngI
varna koI yUnhI bevafA nahIn hOtA
"There must have been some compulsions; nobody becomes disloyal just like that." This is from the ghazal koi kAnTA chubhA nahIn hOtA. Presumably, the Leader of the Opposition meant to suggest that the Prime Minister's hands were forced. Into doing what, I am not sure.
Interestingly, both politicians quoted Urdu couplets, not Hindi poems, extempore. The Congress politician quoted an Urdu poet from Delhi, while the BJP one quoted an Urdu poet from Ayodhya.
