Considering that BJP is non existent or marginally present in many parts of India, UP is more important to the BJP than it is to the Congress. BJP has around 116 seats now. The question is how is it to improve its tally given the certainty that it is going to lose seats in many states like Karataka and Bihar. UP is the BJP's best bet. If Modi can win 40 or 45 seats in UP (out of the total 80) he would have proven his worth. Right now BJP has 10 seats in UP. One other state the BJP was looking at is Maharashtra but here there is a 5 cornered contest (if u count Raj Thackeray's party) and in a 5 cornered contest with a weaker Shiv Sena the chances of improving its tally seems to be nill. So, really, the best bet for the BJP to improve its tally is UP.
