the silEdai is a type of pun in tamil. not all puns are silEdais, but all silEdais are puns. the late ki.va.jagannathan, editor of kalaimagaL magazine, and a student of thamizh thAthA u.vE.swaminAtha iyer was a master of the silEdai.

எங்கே விழுது?

கி.வா.ஜகன்நாதன் அவர்கள் திருப்பனந்தாள் கோயிலுக்குப் பிரசங்கம் செய்யப் போயிருந்தார். பிரசங்கம் முடிந்ததும் ஊருக்குப் புறப்படும் முன் அவருக்குச் சிற்றுண்டி வழங்கப்பட்டது. பொங்கல், இட்லி, சட்னி, சாம்பார் ஆகியவை இடம் பெற்றன.

இலை போட்டபின்பு கி.வா.ஜ.வும் அவருடன் வந்தவர்களும் இலையில் அமர்ந்தனர்.

பரிமாறுபவன் முதலில் கி.வா.ஜ. வின் இலையில் பொங்கலை வைத்தான். பின்னர் ஒரு சிப்பந்தி ஒரு பாத்திரத்தை எடுத்து வந்து, கி.வா.ஜ.வின் இலையில் வைத்துள்ள பொங்கல் மேல் கவிழ்த்தான். ஆனால் ஒன்றும் விழவில்லை.

கி.வா.ஜ அவனை நோக்கி, "என்ன?" என்று கேட்க, "நெய்ங்க..." உருகாமல் விழுதாக இருக்கிறது, சீக்கிரமே விழமாட்டேங்குது" என்று சொன்னான்.

கி.வா.ஜ அவர்கள் நகைச்சுவையாக, "விழுதா, எங்கே விழுது? விழக் காணோமே!" என்று சொல்ல உடனிருந்தவர்கள் அவரது சிலேடையைக் கேட்டு ரசித்துச் சிரித்தனர்.

தலைவனை பையனாக...?

கி.வா.ஜகன்நாதனை ஒரு ஊரில் நடந்த கூட்டம் ஒன்றிற்கு தலைமை தாங்க அழைத்திருந்தனர். கி.வா.ஜ அவர்கள் சிறப்பாக கூட்டத்தை நடத்திக் கொடுத்தார்.

கூட்டம் முடிந்த பின் கொஞ்சம் பழங்களையும், பிஸ்கட்டுகளையும் ஒரு பையில் போட்டு அவரிடம் கொடுத்தனர்.

அந்தப் பையைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்ட கி.வா.ஜ அவர்கள் "என்னைத் 'தலைவனாக'த் தலைமை தாங்க அழைத்துப் 'பையனாக" அனுப்புகிறீர்களே?" என்றார்.

அவரின் சிலேடை நகைச்சுவையை அனைவரும் ரசித்தனர்.

பேரறிஞர் அண்ணா அவர்கள் ஒரு கூட்டத்தை முடித்துவிட்டு அடுத்த கூட்டத்தில் பேசுவதற்கு அவசரமாகக் கிளம்பினார். அவரோடு சில நண்பர்களும் காரில் ஏறிக் கொண்டனர். அண்ணா, டிரைவரிடம், “தம்பி, விரைவாக வண்டியை ஓட்டுவாயா?” என்று கேட்டார்.

டிரைவரும் உடனே, “கவலைப்படாதீங்கய்யா... ஒரு நொடியில கொண்டு போய் விட்டுடறேன் பாருங்க...” என்றிருக்கிறார். அவர் காரை மிக வேகமாக ஓட்டிச் சென்றதில் சாலையில் ஒரு பள்ளம் இருப்பதைக் கவனிக்காமல் போக, கார் பள்ளத்தில் இறங்கி உருண்டது. அனைவரும் காரைவிட்டு வெளியே வர, நல்லவேளையாக யாருக்கும் அதிகமாகக் காயம் இல்லை.

அனைவரும் கோபமாக டிரைவரை திட்டத் தொடங்க, அண்ணா அவர்களை கையமர்த்தி விட்டு இப்படிக் கூறினாராம்: ”நாம கிளம்பறப்பவே அவர்தான் சொன்னார்ல... ஒரு ‘நொடி’யில விடறேன்னு. சொன்னபடி விட்டுட்டார். விடுங்க...” நொடி என்பதற்கு வினாடி, பள்ளம் என்று இரு பொருள் உண்டு. இப்படி அண்ணா சொன்னதும் அனைவரும் கவலை மறந்து சிரித்து விட்டார்களாம்.

Nice anecdotes. I'll share my own.

Years ago arriving in Chennai from Chicago in the wee hours of the morning the first thing I wanted to do was to have a fresh cup of frothing south indian coffee. I told the taxi driver as much and he was nice enough to find a small shop en route.

I was the first customer. The manager asked the server to make me their best coffee. He did so. And then, as was customary, poured the coffee back and forth between two tumblers to bring out the froth as well as cool it. While performing this masterly "coffee aathufying", he was defying gravity by going diagonally without spilling even a drop of it.

When he served me I was very pleased, complimented on his skill and asked him for his name. He said it was Mani. I smiled and said, "Hereafter you are no ordinary Mani but Sindha Mani". The manager had a big chuckle.
