His mother was a major inspiration, motivating him to pursue his studies abroad in the 1970s, in spite of distance and costs. "I applied to Iowa State University as it charged no application fee," says Suresh.

Max and Saamiyaar,

Now we know why he went to Iowas state. I raised the question long back.

He could have asked the universities to waive the application fee citing hardship. I am sure they would have.

in his days - the late 80s, it was not easy to get into Iowa State, Ohio state, Texas A & M or Purdue. they would not touch a non-IIT application. the ranking was totally different from what it is now for those schools. i recall GT ranking was in the 20s while the ohio st and Iowa St were in top 15 in many areas.

>>>I know a couple of guys who went to Iowa State who must have been his classmates from IIT. The no-fee thing now makes sense.
