I thought Sri Ram Singh was even ahead before his injury made him a forgotten figure. Also, Milkha Singh in the 1960 (?) the Flying Sikh was a serious medal contender.

Milkha Singh in the 1960 Rome Olympics. In the 400 Meters race, he looked back when they were rounding the last turn and that was enough for two guys to pass him for gold and silver.

i didn't have milkha singh in mind. of course, "closest" is a matter of opinion.

the answer: henry rebello of bangalore and madras. he was a triple jumper, and was favoured to win the gold medal in that event at the london olympics in 1948.

that was india's first entry into the olympics as free india. rebello was then only nineteen. his bid for gold ended in tragedy; in his first jump, he tore his hamstring and had to be carried back on a stretcher. he abandoned his athletics career after that.

rebello graduated from loyola college, madras, joined the indian air force, and retired as a group captain.
