Liberation Day Empty Liberation Day

Post by Idéfix Wed Sep 18, 2013 12:27 am

Today is the anniversary of the liberation of Hyderabad state from the Nizam. All political parties in Telangana celebrated the anniversary, except Congress and MIM. MIM was the party of the Nizam, so it is not surprising that they didn't celebrate the occasion. But Congress stayed away as well, although it was Congress Home Minister Sardar Patel who took the decisive action back in 1948 to end the Nizam's tinpot dictatorship and Razakar atrocities. According to this news report, Congress did not observe the day because of pressure from MIM. That is a rather sorry state of affairs. When Telangana becomes a separate state, I hope this becomes an official holiday. Better still, they should inaugurate the new state formally on September 17, 2014. That way the new holiday will just replace the state formation holiday now observed on November 1.
