what are the options? I have seen a friend buy some sorta sim from Edison... are they good enough?

or shd I just hand them a neice's phone which is not used much?

Why don't you buy a prepaid SIM card from T-mobile or someone?

Check what frequencies the phone supports. Shop for prepaid sim cards from second tier services like Cricket, Virgin, Simple Mobile, etc. These are always cheaper for same service than the first tier providers like AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile. Most second tier service providers use the network infrastructure of the big providers. So, the signal strength and coverage will be the same.

He needs at least a triband phone for it to work here. Quadband is better. In addition, the phone has to be SIM-unlocked before he comes to the US. (It is expensive to SIM-unlock phones here.)

If he has a CDMA phone in India (with Reliance), it won't work with a SIM here.
