May be he is following the example of ancient religious masters / personalities (prophets and sages etc.) who are depicted currently in pictures and paintings with beards, which mostly were the result of their not having proper and safe grooming aids (e.g. razors, soap and even water) easily available to them long ago, especially when they lived in forests or  arid/barren lands or they moved constantly during long treks for preaching etc.
