Modi govt abetted, pushed 2002 riots, Cong govt tried to stop 1984 riots

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government was responsible for 'abetting and pushing' the 2002 Gujarat riots while the Congress government tried to stop the 1984 riots, Rahul Gandhi said on Monday but offered no apology for the anti-Sikh violence.

Pitted against Modi in a virtual Presidential-style contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Gandhi said he was not scared of him and claimed that Congress will defeat BJP.

Making a direct attack on Modi, he said, "the fact of the matter is that innocent people died in 1984 and innocent people dying is a horrible thing and should not happen. The difference between Gujarat and 1984 was that the government of Gujarat was involved in the riots."

Asked in an interview to a TV channel as to how he could say that when Modi has been given a clean chit by the courts, Gandhi said, "... he was the Chief Minister when the Gujarat riots happened....The government in Gujarat was actually abetting and pushing the riots further."

Seeking to differentiate the role of governments during the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi and 2002 in Gujarat, he said, "the simple difference is that in 1984, the government was not not involved in the massacre of people. In Gujarat it was."

No leader? they stopped the announcement of death of pm by several hours to allow rajiv to reach capital. shoved aside pranab who said country cannot be without a pm. When sikh regiments rebelled they crushed them. All this happened without someone orchastrating events?

the then prime ministers famous statement of when a tree falls cannot be forgotten.

cd if it happens in congress regime it is because of circumstances beyond our control and our leader got killed.
but if 59 kar sevaks got burned down allegedly by another religion goons it is all modi's fault. that is possibly as good as digvijay singh talking. such a hypocritical way of interpreting events? shame on anyone who regards loss of life in 1984 or 2002 as forgivable events.

I don't think I was condoning nor making excuses for congress's inaction I was merely suggesting these two incidents are not comparable. Gujarat riots appear premeditated where as 1984 riots were not, if anything they're similar to 1992 LA riots. Modi was aware of the tense situation and had time to prepare and would've prevented, if he did not abet then he certainly failed to control the situation which doesn't bode well for his leadership, makes him an inept & incompetent adminsitrator

Why are they not comparable? Both were mass murders. Govts failed to prevent the vulnerable.
Both are emotionally charged one of a kind issues.
There is ample evidence of connivance of leadership at the top.
Your effort to differentiate the emotion of indira's murderer as more deserving of revenge over burning alive 59 karsevaks is illogical.
Congress refusal to bring the culprits to justice is an indicator of its instigator.
neither Congress nor bjp should be execused for their crimes.

I never said that nor implied. Please don't try to put words in my mouth. My point was Govt. was blindsided by the riots after Indira Gandhi's assassination which was not the case with Gujarat.
